Zendaya Reportedly Headed Under The Sea With Disney’s Live-Action ‘The Little Mermaid’

For decades, The Little Mermaid has remained a classic animated film in the world of Disney. Now, it’s coming back to the big screen as a live-action movie. And Disney vet Zendaya is rumored to be a part of the leading cast!

Back To The Big Screen

Over the past few years, Disney has made some of its finest animated movies into live-action remakes. Most recently, Beauty and The Beast, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stephens, did very well in theatres worldwide. It only makes sense that the company would remake more of its most popular works.

People

One of those great films heading back to theaters is the 1989 animation, The Little Mermaid. Though the film is in early development, composers Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken will co-write the music. It’s also been rumored that the remake has found its Ariel in actress and singer Zendaya!

Part Of Your World

Zendaya has reportedly been offered the role of Ariel in the live-action film. Reps from both Disney and Zendaya refused to comment. However, if the rumors are true, it would make Ariel a mermaid of color––completely different from the animated character and most Disney princesses past. One Twitter fan named @Bosslogic
even made the following poster to reflect how Zendaya might look!

Film School Rejects

No matter her race, Zendaya would be more than qualified to take on the role. She not only acts and sings but has worked with Disney before. She appeared in several Disney Channel shows and movies, including her leading role in K.C. Undercover. Zendaya even mentioned that she would like to work for Disney again and create more opportunities for women of color.

More Remakes In The Works

This new version of The Little Mermaid is one of several live-action remakes that are coming soon. Early next year, Dumbo, directed by Tim Burton, will be out in theaters. Fans will also see Aladdin, The Lion King, and Mulan interpreted in live action within the next few years.

BBC

There’s no word just yet on when The Little Mermaid will be coming to theaters. However, with the past success of these new versions, it should surely be a sight to see. Fans will also know soon if Zendaya will play the redheaded princess of the sea.
