Is ‘The X-Files’ On Its Way To Season 12?

For the past two years, fans were thrilled to see Mulder and Scully back on the scene. With the recent wave of cancellations, people are concerned with the status of The X-Files. One only person knows the answer to this burning question.

I Still Want To Believe

Fox TV Group Chief Gary Newman revealed that there are no current plans to bring the show back. One major factor for this decision involves the ratings. Since the season 11 premiere “My Struggle III,” viewership has been taking a dive.

Earlier this year, Newman wasn’t sure if the series would make it to season 12. “I would not exclude the possibility that there would be more. But not only is there no plan, there hasn’t been a single conversation. It’s too early to even speculate,” he stated at the TCA Winter Press Tour.

A Bid Farewell

Many people assume the show is done because of Gillian Anderson’s exit. The actress stated that it’s time for her to move on. “I’m finished, and that’s the end of that. There’s lots of things that I want to do in my life and in my career, and it’s been an extraordinary opportunity and extraordinary character, and I am hugely grateful,” she said at the same press tour. In 1997, the actress earned an Emmy and Golden Globe for her performance.

Show creator Chris Carter believes the series can go on without Anderson. “I think that certainly, The X-Files has more life in it, there are more stories to tell, with Gillian or without,” he told Digital Spy.

More Accolades

The 11th season has earned the show two Saturn Awards nominations for Best Science Fiction Television Series and Best Actress on Television.

If you want to catch up on season 11 or rewatch some previous seasons, the series is currently streaming on Hulu.
