Gal Gadot smashes the glass-ceiling with her strength and grace Breaking into the superhero pantheon in 1941, Wonder Woman was depicted as the ultimate feminist, having super human strength and intelligence, as well as incredible beauty. Mike Coppola/Getty Images Gal Gadot’s rise to fame is far from your typical Hollywood story. Like the legendary phoenix, she rose from humble beginnings in a small Israeli city to Hollywood global stardom. But how did her story begin? 2. Rising from the ashes Gadot’s maternal grandparents were holocaust survivors. Her grandfather was born in a small village in the Czech Republic and his entire family was killed during the Holocaust. He survived the war and sought refuge in Israel, where he would begin a new life and rebuild his family. Instagram/Gal Gadot “My grandpa taught me there is NO wrong religion. No wrong color. And no wrong race. I was taught to love all people for what their heart is. We’re all spirits and souls in this universe. Light should always beat darkness as love should always beat hatred. Today we remember and never forget,” Gal wrote on instagram on Holocaust Memorial Day. 3. Early Life in Israel Gadot was born in Petah Tikva, Israel in 1985 and grew up in neighboring Rosh HaAyin just outside Tel Aviv. Her major in high school was biology and due to her height, 5″10, she says she was good at basketball. Her first few jobs as a teenager were babysitting and working at a neighborhood Burger King. After high school Gadot went on to study law and political science at IDC Herzliya college. Instagram/Gal Gadot “I was brought up in a very Jewish, Israeli family environment, so of course my heritage is very important to me. I want people to have a good impression of Israel. I find that people in the US, especially in Hollywood, tend to have positive opinions on Israel—both Jewish and non-Jewish people alike,” Gadot told The Daily Beast. 4. Beauty Pageant Miss Israel 2004 At the young age of 18 Gal Gadot won the 2004 Miss Israel beauty pageant and went on to compete in the 2004 Miss Universe pageant in Ecuador. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Gadot said that she entered the Miss Israel pageant with the intention of not winning, “I’m not that type of girl,” she stated. Twitter Gadot told W magazine that she had entered the Miss Israel pageant only due to the insistence of her mother but never dreamed that she would actually win. 5. Self-sabotage Gadot has admitted to sabotaging herself in the 2014 Miss Universe pageant. Stating that winning Miss Israel and all the responsibilities that came along with it scared her, and she didn’t want to take on more. Twitter “I wasn’t behaving. I’m a really good girl but because I was afraid that I’m gonna win again, because I didn’t want to win the Miss Israel pageant and then I won, I figured, ‘Oh no, I don’t want them to choose me again!’ So I came down late to all the rehearsals and I wasn’t wearing the right evening gowns for breakfast.” She even admitted to pretending not to understand a question from judge Paula Abdul, replying, “I’m sorry, English not so good.” Gadot says that she successfully didn’t win the pageant. 6. Military Service Gadot served for two years in the Israel Defense Forces as a combat instructor starting when was 20 years old. In Israel there is a mandatory draft for all citizens over 18 with women serving two years and men serving three. Pintrest “Part of being Israeli is to go to the army. All my friends went, my parents went and my grandparents went,” Gadot told People magazine. Gadot has stated that her army service and combat experience has helped her acting career and even won her the role of Gisele in Fast & Furious. 7. A down to Earth love story Gadot married Israeli real estate developer Yaron Varsano in 2008 and they currently have two daughters together, Maya and Alma. From traversing their social media accounts it’s apparent just how much these two are in love and support each other. instagram/Gal_Gadot “We met nearly 10 years ago through mutual friends at this very strange party in the Israeli desert. It was all about yoga, chakras, and eating healthy — we didn’t exactly find ourselves there, but we found each other. I think I [knew he was the one], but I was too young to get it. He did. He’s 10 years older than me. He told me on our second date he was serious and wasn’t going to wait more than two years to ask me to marry him. Fast-forward two years; he proposed. We were married in 2008,” Gadot said in an interview with Glamour. The couple, to this day, still enjoy vacationing in the desert and reminiscing of their first meeting. 8. Early acting career Prior to becoming a superhero, Gadot appeared in a relatively unknown Israeli series called Bubot before landing the role of drug trafficker and weapons expert Gisele in her first movie, Fast & Furious. She would come back to appear in three more movies in the Fast & Furious series. Frazer Harrison-Getty Images Gadot attributes her army experience and knowledge of weapons for landing the role. She also takes great pride in doing her own stunts. “I want to have gunshots, I want to fly up in the air, on the motorcycle, whatever. I want to do it all, by myself — no stunt-woman,” Gadot told Real Style Network in 2013. 9. Almost a Bond Girl Prior to her role in Fast & Furious Gadot was approached for an audition for a James Bond movie. She was unfortunately beat out for the part by Olga Kurylenko. Pinterest Years later, Gadot would come back to beat Kurylenko out for the role of Wonder Woman. 10. Beyonce’s role in Batman V Superman When Gal Gadot first auditioned for the role of Wonder Woman for the movie Batman v Superman she had no idea what the role was for. Director, Zack Snyder, asked Gadot to come in for a camera test, “they were looking at six or seven girls, and we were all in separate trailers and were told to stay inside until they called us. Waiting is my enemy Number One, and I was losing my mind.” Kevin Winter/Getty Images Gadot partially credits Beyonce for her successful Wonder Woman audition, stating that listening to her music while waiting for the audition calmed her nerves. “I decided to put on Beyoncé… Who runs the world? Girls! I just started to dance, and I let my anxiety go. Thank you, Beyoncé!” Gadot told W magazine. 11. Getting the part Gal Gadot was on a plane traveling alone from Tel Aviv to Los Angeles when her agent was trying to contact her to let her know she had officially landed the role. Gadot said that when she landed in Los Angeles and saw all the missed messages she raced to contact her agent. Pinterest While still on the tarmac she was informed that she got the part and that it was for the role of Wonder Woman. Unfortunately she was traveling alone and no one to share the experience with apart from the unsuspecting passengers on the plane who had to experience her screams of joy. Gadot jokes that those people must have thought she was a crazy person. 12. Online backlash News of Gadot landing the role of Wonder Woman resulted in a wave of online criticism due to her looks. Gal stated that the backlash was “’cause my boobs were too small.” Pinterest “Yeah—that was a big problem,” she added, laughing. “The Web really paid attention to the important side of Wonder Woman,” Gadot told W magazine. In case you were wondering, no, Gal doesn’t care about what you think of her small boobs and she’s not afraid to let you know. 13. UN Ambassador scandal In 2016 Wonder Woman was elected as a United Nations Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls and then abruptly removed from the position. The online petition for the characters removal read: “Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent ‘warrior’ woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character’s current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions.” Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images “There are so many horrible things that are going on in the world, and this is what you’re protesting, seriously?” Gal Gadot retorted in an interview with Time Magazine. The scantily clad, curvaceous comic book superhero had her appointment as a United Nations honorary ambassador cut in less than two months following protests and the online petition. 14. Preparation for Wonder Woman In preparation for the role Gadot took up various forms of martial arts and gained 17 pounds of muscle. She also stuck to a strict diet and training regimen for six months leading up to production. instagram/gal_gadot Gadot has stated that training for Wonder Woman was harder than training for the Israeli Army. 15. Superhero mom Like a True superhero Gal filmed re-shoots for Wonder Woman last November while five months pregnant with her second child, not letting any obstacle deter her. Instagram/Gal_Gadot The pregnancy did pose a challenge for the costume department, which had to cut out middle portions of her costumes with green material and be edited in post-production. “On close-up I looked very much like Wonder Woman. On wide shots I looked very funny, like Wonder Woman pregnant with Kermit the Frog,” Gadot stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. 16. F-bomb alert Leading up to the premier of Wonder Woman, Gadot appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to create some additional movie buzz. But it wasn’t until she accidentally dropped on F-bomb when describing the anticipation of waiting to hear if she got the part that the buzz really got started. Screenshot/YouTube The audience went wild and the scene quickly went viral due to her adorable girl-next-door quality and mock shame. 17. Box office success Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, has grossed of $598 million worldwide and is currently the sixth highest grossing film of 2017. Setting records for the biggest opening for a woman director and the biggest for a woman-led comic book movie. Kevin Winter/Getty Images The movie has received mostly positive reviews, with some calling it “the best film in the DC Extended Universe to date” and praising Jenkin’s direction. Critics have also praided Gadot and co-star Chris Pine’s performances and on-screen chemistry. 18. Accusations of sexism News that Gadot was paid a mere $300,000 for her starring role leaked on social media and quickly went viral. Causing an online uproar and cries of sexism. instagram/gal_gadot The numbers however are quite deceiving. If true, then it is possible that the $300,000 sum is Gadot’s base pay for her role. But this doesn’t include additional figures that factor into how much an actor makes, such as box office bonuses, contractual obligations to appear in future movies and additional compensation which is dependent on the success of the movie. 19. Feminism Gal is a feminist and considers her roles in the Fast series and as Wonder Woman to be empowering for women everywhere. Twitter “There aren’t enough good roles for strong women. I wish we had more female writers. Most of the female characters you see in films today are “the poor heartbroken girl”. That’s why I’m so proud of the Fast movies. I feel like Giselle is an empowering woman.” 20. Boycott Prior to the release of Wonder Woman, Lebanon, Algeria and Tunisia banned the airing of the movie. The countries claimed that the ban was because the lead actress is an Israeli citizen who served in the IDF and expressed support for Israeli troops during the 2014 Israeli war with Gaza. Kevin Winter/Getty Images The Jewish World Congress released a video on Facebook claiming that sexism and not politics were behind to boycott initiative. The boycott however didn’t effect the success of the movie. If anything it helped. If there is anyway to stir up interest and get more people in the theater it’s trying to get it banned. 21. Women-only screening controversy Controversy erupted yet again when a popular Texas Theater in Austin announced that it would air a “No Guy Allowed” showing of Wonder Woman. “Everyone working at this screening — venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team — will be female,” the Theater stated. instagram/gal_gadot Outrage of sexism and bigotry erupted online. The theater however embraced the backlash and announced plans to build a gender-neutral restroom with all-gender urinals. The showing reportedly sold out within two hours. Guess that just proves controversy sells. 22. Justice League Gadot will return to the silver-screen in November 2017 for her third appearance as Wonder Woman in the highly anticipated superhero movie Justice League. Kevin Winter/Getty Images Superhero movies are unfortunately, for the most part… bad. But Wonder Woman has seriously raised expectations for her next appearance. 25. Lights, camera, sequel! Due to the success of Wonder Woman we are all expecting a second movie shortly. Gadot was contracted for three feature films, of which Wonder Woman was the second, and has reportedly extended her contract beyond that.
