William Hurt To Return As General Ross For ‘Black Widow’

Black Widow

Work on the Black Widow film has been going smoothly with shoots in Norway, England, and Georgia. Fans lost their minds hearing Tony Stark would be featured in the upcoming film. Now, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross will be joining the party as well.

Ross The Boss

Set photos show Oscar-winning actor William Hurt reprising his role as Ross. Hurt began portraying Ross in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Eight years after Hulk, Hurt returned for Captain America: Civil War. With Civil War, Ross was given a new change in attitude. “I loved playing Ross the first time because I was able to try and create an ego as big as the monster he was chasing. And one that was as warped too. [Ross in Civil War] is different because it’s a different style. It’s a more modernized style,” Hurt told IGN. “And what they’ve done is they’ve taken a character who was the Ross from the older film and made a new version. This is a much newer Ross. A much different Ross. And I liked that a lot. I haven’t had a lot of time to understand it, but I’m doing the best I can. And they haven’t fired me yet.” Hurt’s last appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was this year’s Avengers: Endgame.

Arrival Of The Thunderbolts?

With Hurt’s appearance, many are speculating if the Thunderbolts will hit the MCU. In comic books, the Thunderbolts are a superhero team of former villains. As Red Hulk, Ross assembled a team consisting of Deadpool, Elektra, The Punisher, and Agent Venom. Recently, the rights to Deadpool were shifted to Marvel Studios. Elektra and The Punisher were featured in Netflix’s string of Marvel programming.

Plenty of longtime MCU characters have joined the Thunderbolts in the past. Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Ghost, Crossbones, and Winter Soldier are alumni of the team. Luke Cage and Ghost Rider were also members of the Thunderbolts.

In 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn showed interest in doing a Thunderbolts movie. “Thunderbolts? I will tell you, one time I was saying to Kevin [Feige], we were sitting on set together on one of the days he visited and I said, ‘You know, I really want to make Thunderbolts,’ and he said, ‘James, if Guardians does well you’ll be able to do whatever you want so we’ll see what happens,” Gunn told ScreenRant. Currently, he’s working on The Suicide Squad, which has similarities to the Thunderbolts.

It’s Prequel Time

The forthcoming Black Widow film takes place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. The film finds Natasha Romanoff having to confront her past. The movie stars David Harbour as Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, and Rachel Weisz as Melina. With Yelena Belova in the film, fans believe she’ll take over the Black Widow name. In the comics, Belova becomes Black Widow following the death of Romanoff.

For Black Widow director Cate Shortland, the character’s past plays a strong part in the story. “I think that’s what drew me to the story, she’s got so many secrets, she’s got so much vulnerability and I think that’s what makes her such a great heroine. In this film we get to understand her past and put the pieces of herself together and come out a whole person,” she told Collider.

Black Widow will feature Johansson’s second executive producer credit. This additional role gives her a more hands-on approach to a character she’s portrayed for a decade. “I feel like I’m in control of the destiny of this film, which gives me a lot more peace of mind,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. Black Widow will be released on May 1, 2020. This film will officially kick off Phase Four of the MCU.
