The Internet Saw Will Smith’s Genie Look In ‘Aladdin’ Teaser And Reactions Were Ruthless

The Internet is buzzing again about Disney’s upcoming Aladdin remake after the company released a teaser trailer for the film. Of course, Will Smith’s portrayal of the popular and animated Genie stood out to many fans. And not necessarily in a good way.

Going Blue

Smith made a brief but memorable appearance in the teaser. As Aladdin (Mena Massoud) enters the Cave of Wonders and rubs the Genie’s lamp, Smith appears, having been transformed into a blue Genie using CGI effects. “You really don’t know who I am?” he asks Aladdin. “Genie? Wishes? Lamp? None of that ringing a bell?”

In a first look at the film, Disney originally had Smith portray the Genie in human form without the character’s famous blue hue. That news had fans in an uproar, causing the company to rethink its plans. However, now that they’ve seen Smith’s new look, they weren’t too impressed with that either.

Mixed Reactions

Aladdin fanatics flocked to social media to share their disappointment in Smith’s look. “The new Willy Wonka remake looks weird but I respect the bold casting choices. #Aladdintrailer #WillSmith #willywonka,” one Twitter user commented. Another said, “All three of my wishes are that I hadn’t seen this.”

The comments and memes only got worse from there as people compared Smith’s appearance to other movie and TV characters.

Playing Defense

After the backlash, Disney sent out a statement in an attempt to reassure audiences that Smith and the rest of the cast would do the original film justice. “We have one of the most anticipated films of the year and are confident that audiences will fall in love with the Genie and all of the characters when it hits the big screen this May,” the statement read.

Smith seemed confident in his portrayal as well, admitting in an interview that he was adding a bit of “hip hop flavor” to the role. He was inspired by his past characters in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Hitch, as well as Independence Day and Bad BoysAudiences will be able to see this new Genie in full when Aladdin hits theaters on May 24, 2019.
