It’s been just over 20 years since the original “Matrix” movie came out and blew our minds. The movie managed to bridge the gap between dense, psychological sci-fi and big-budget action movies. It explored profound philosophical ideas, but it also managed to deliver some of the best action scenes ever put on screen. So, of course, “The Matrix” is widely considered one of the best movies of its generation.
So, when Warner Brothers announced earlier this year that they were in talks for “The Matrix 4,” the internet had feelings. Some of those negative feelings were calmed when Lana Wachowski, one of the original creators and directors, announced that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss would be reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity. But further information about the movie has been sparse. Now, speculation is running wild.
One of the rumors currently circulating is that “The Matrix 4” will kick off a new “Matrix” trilogy. How accurate is this rumor? What else is known about the movie? Here are all the details you need to know.
A New Trilogy?
The entertainment site We Got This Covered is reporting that inside sources have revealed that this new “Matrix” movie will be the first in a new trilogy. The site is known for being the first to provide insider information about upcoming movies. Several of the rumors they’ve reported on have turned out to be accurate, so it’s possible that their story about “The Matrix 4” starting a new series could be true. But everyone involved in the film is keeping quiet. There are very few details about the casting and the plot currently.
What Do We Know For Sure?
Well, obviously, Lana Wachowski will be writing and directing the new film. Her sister Lily Wachowski will not be involved in “The Matrix 4,” but she has been vocally supportive of the new film and her sister. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss have both confirmed that they’ll be reprising their roles. This is interesting given that Neo and Trinity both died at the end of “Matrix Revolutions.” It’s been revealed that they did upload their minds to the matrix before their deaths, so that’s likely how they’ll be returning for this new movie.
So far, no other actors have confirmed that they’ll be reprising their roles. Laurence Fishburne has not announced that he’ll be back as Morpheus. However, there are rumors that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who starred in “Venom,” will be playing a younger version of Morpheus. Whether this will be a flashback or if Morpheus is younger in “The Matrix 4” is unclear. Jada Pinkett Smith is reportedly in talks to reprise her role as Niobe, but she hasn’t yet confirmed that she’s onboard.
As for new characters, there aren’t many details. Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II have all confirmed that they’ve signed on for principal roles, but they’re not talking about what those roles are, and neither is Wachowski.
Details about the plot are scarce too. Wachowski has said:
“Many of the ideas [my sister] Lilly [Wachowski] and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
So it’s clear that the film will again explore how we perceive reality, probably with a healthy dose of philosophy about how reality is all theoretical anyway.
When Is It Happening?
Production is set to begin in February 2020 in either Chicago or San Francisco. The release date is currently set for May 2021. Incidentally, the release date is the same as the release date for the next installment of Reeves’ other blockbuster series “John Wick.” Try not to read too far into that detail, however.
