This Is Why Mila Kunis Has Multicolored Eyes

Mila Kunis

From That ’70s Show to Family Guy, actress Mila Kunis has become a household name in television. One standout feature from the Golden Globe-nominated star is her multicolored eyes. Unfortunately, this wasn’t something discovered upon birth. It came from a hazardous condition.

One Insane Aftermath

For many years, Kunis was blind in one eye because of chronic iritis. The condition leads to the inflammation of the iris. In a 2011 interview with Cosmopolitan, Kunis discussed how she persevered through this tough battle. “I was blind in one eye for many years, and nobody knew. I’m not blind anymore. I had surgery a couple of months ago. They cut it open and dropped a new lens in there,” Kunis told the publication.

Following the surgery, Kunis’ repaired eye began to change color. Suddenly, the star had one brown eye and one green eye. This condition is called heterochromia, and it can be achieved through genetics or an eye injury. Only one percent of the population has this condition.

Only A Select Few

Kunis isn’t the only celebrity to have heterochromia. Iconic cricket player Shane Warne spent his whole life not knowing he had the condition. One day, the star got some help from his two million Twitter followers. “What does it mean to have 2 different colored eyes? Anyone shed some light? Thank you,” he tweeted while sharing a selfie.

Cy Young Award-winning baseball player Max Scherzer has been pitching with blue and green eyes. “He was born with them. Then he was 4 months old. I looked down at my baby, and he had a blue and green eye. Very clearly. I have pictures and everything,” Scherzer’s mother Jan told The Kansas City Star. “I took him to the pediatrician shortly after that, and he said, ‘They may go back and forth. They may change again this year.’ As the year went on, the blue eye got bluer, and the green eye changed to brown.” In 2012, the athlete began wearing heterochromatic goggles on the field.

When actress Kate Bosworth landed the role of Lois Lane in Superman Returns, her eyes were an issue. During her career, the Los Angeles native has to wear contacts for the camera. For Superman Returns, things turned around for her. “One of the first things I had to do when I got to Australia was screen test for my eyes with the wig and the costume, just to see if Bryan [Singer, the director] wanted to keep them the way they are. And he decided that he wanted to,” the star told Sydney Morning Herald. “So now the Lois Lane dolls have different colored eyes, which is strange.”

Becoming A Trending Topic Soon?

While heterochromia is predominantly natural, some companies have been making it more accessible. In 2011, Strōma Medical announced plans to change eye color through laser technology. “Our first project has been changing brown to blue because that change is the most straight-forward. We have changed green to blue, but it involves an extra step, so we will wait a beat to roll that out,” founder Gregg Homer told Medgadget. “Brown to green is more complicated. We’ve figured it out on paper, but it will require separate studies before we will feel comfortable releasing it.” As of 2019, the company still isn’t ready for the public.

For Kunis, this transformation has been completely life-altering. “To say my life hasn’t changed would be a lie. It has changed, I don’t really know how. I can’t complain, not that I am complaining, but I can’t leave my house as freely as I used to,” she told Marie Claire. Fortunately, it won’t stop her from gaining more roles in the future.
