What to Expect from President Trump’s First Congressional Address

Published

on

President Donald J. Trump will give his first Congressional address tonight and many are not sure what to expect. Since winning the office, he has not spoken to any crowds that were not 100% supportive. He has also not made any effort to broaden his appeal past his base. When he talks to the legislative branch (and the nation), he speak to an audience where at least half do not approve of his job performance. He is the first president to be under water with the public at this stage of his presidency. According to a Gallup poll, 55% of Americans disapprove of his job performance while only 45% say he is doing a good job.

Politico has published a run down of the items the President will address in his speech. He will list all of his accomplishments since taking office, lay out his vision for the nation, showcase his desire to work with Congress and bring the country together. While the speech is not an official “State of the Union” address, it is expected to be a very similar kind of event.  Even the President has acknowledged that his communications with the American public have not been ideal. He told Fox & Friends“I think I get an A in terms of what I’ve actually done, but in terms of messaging, I’d give myself a C or a C+.”

It’s hard to see how this will happen, given the way Trump has acted since the election. In his acceptance speech, he said, “It is time. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be President for all of Americans, and this is so important to me. For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country.” Unfortunately, he has done little, if anything to reach out to people who do not support him. From the “failing” New York Times to Congressman John Lewis and Saturday Night Live, he has continued to attack people and organizations that have criticized him on Twitter.

For their part, Congressional Democrats are planning a protest of their own. Some will bring immigrants to the event. Their move protesting the President’s stance on immigration. This includes his recent failed executive order banning people from certain countries from entering the country and the uptick in anti-immigrant raids and deportations.

Regardless of the content of the actual speech, everyone expects Trump to issue a Twitter storm once it is over. It will be interesting to see what takeaways he has after his journey to Capitol Hill.
