American Idol brought us so many amazing singers during its original 15-season run on Fox. With ABC reviving the show, we take a look back at some of the show’s previous winners. If you think we’re discussing major acts like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, think again.
Ruben Studdard
In 2013, season two winner Ruben Studdard returned to reality television as a contestant on The Biggest Loser. By the time the show ended, the singer lost an astonishing 119 pounds. To this day, he continues to tour and make music. In 2018, Studdard released a Luther Vandross tribute album titled Ruben Sings Luther.

After winning season five, Taylor Hicks released his platinum-selling debut album on Arista. In 2013, he became the first Idol winner to have a Vegas residency. In the fall of 2017, the singer released his first song in eight years with “Six Strings and Diamond Rings.” He currently hosts the cooking show State Plate.

Kris Allen
Kris Allen spent years touring in support of five studio albums since winning season eight. In 2017, he started a new musical project with touring members Cale Mills and Chris Torres called The Dames. When he’s not playing shows, he’s taking care of his two children with his wife Katy.

In 2010, season nine winner Lee DeWyze broke onto the music scene with his debut single “Sweet Serendipity.” While he wasn’t as successful as previous winners, the Illinois native has still been releasing music for his fans. In 2018, he released his seventh studio album Paranoia on Shanchie Records.

Phillip Phillips
Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips holds the title of best-selling American Idol single with “Home.” The Georgia native has spent time on the road with Matchbox Twenty and Goo Goo Dolls. Aside from singing, Phillips is supporting numerous causes such as the Veterans Health Research Institute and Habitat for Humanity.
