Spoilers: Walking Dead ‘Time Jump’ And More In Store For Season 9

Published

on

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on Oct. 7 and season 9 looks to take the show in a new direction after the Rick-versus-Negan finale. With a new showrunner taking the helm, expect to see “walkers” return as a larger threat and some familiar faces leave the show.

TWD Fast Forwards To A Simpler Time

The show fast forwards a few years into the future when Alexandria, Hilltop, The Kingdom and The Sanctuary communities are flourishing. However, we’ll also see the characters are increasingly having to make due without modern conveniences such as guns and cars—instead relying on hand-made weapons and horses—while the groups figure out how to build a future together. As we see problems start to arise and rifts start to form, we’ll have few episodes to solve them while knowing two beloved characters are likely leaving.

Maggie Stepping Out?

Lauren Cohan (Maggie), will likely appear in only a handful of Season 9 episodes as she segues to ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier. While her involvement in the second half of Season 9 remains in flux, she said in April that there is “a lot more Maggie story to tell,” which gives fans hope. But she’s not the only one whose future appears in doubt.

Rick’s Imminent Departure

Andrew Lincoln’s star character Rick Grimes will not be on the show after season 9, although the exact circumstances surrounding Grimes’ exit strategy are a mystery. It’s expected Lincoln will appear in the early part of the season, as the actor has already returned to London and shaved off Grimes’ signature beard. But as one long-time actor departs, another plans to make an appearance…

‘Frenemy’ Shane Returns?

It’s been confirmed that Jon Bernthal will return in season 9 to reprise his role as Shane Walsh. The friend-turned-enemy met his end in season 2 after Grimes stabbed him and his son Carl shot a zombified version of Walsh. With that in mind, it’s likely Walsh will return as a hallucination or in a flashback. However, another of Grimes’ enemies seems very much alive…

Negan’s Back…In Jail

Despite having his neck slit by Grimes, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is alive in this future, although he is still a prisoner after losing to Grimes in season 8. As Grimes tries to lead everyone toward building a civilization, zombies are once again threatening that while Negan foreshadows that everything will be torn apart.
