Son Reveals Beautiful Love Story Behind Elderly Couple in Viral Photo

Published

A photo of an elderly man feeding his wife ice cream on an extremely hot day recently went viral but the love story behind it all is even more beautiful than we could have possibly imagined. Pastor Brent Kelley’s photo on Facebook has been viewed, shared, and commented on by thousands. Nonetheless, almost nothing was known about this elderly couple who exhibited timeless love—until now.

Fox17 News got the exclusive story from the couple’s son, Cannon Mayes, who stressed that the love story of his parents, Will and Peggy, is hard as much as it is beautiful. He told the real story behind the now-famous ice cream photo.

Will was a pastor and Peggy was a church member and they have been married for 34 years. Prior to her stroke, Peggy had always been the one to take care of Will and the rest of the family. Their roles have been reversed, however, after the tragic incident.

“They’ve had a really tough time. My mother had a stroke five years ago. She was the energizer bunny. She was the social network and everything collapsed around that because she wasn’t there anymore and so they really worked hard at trying to figure out ways to show love to each other,” said Mayes.

Mayes shared that his dad was surprised by the attention the picture had been getting while his mother, on the other hand, is completely oblivious to the whole thing.

Peggy may be unaware of the viral photo but her son believes that she feels the meaning of what the picture portrays.

“She feels that. She can’t speak very much but she feels it and she loves holding his hand and just being there with him,” said Mayes.

“We are thankful we can put out the message of love. It doesn’t matter your age, you just got to find a way to love,” Mayes said.
