Does ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season Finale Leave The Hargreeve Family Stuck In A Time Warp?

Published

on

The popular Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy, leaves fans scratching their heads with a season finale that no one saw coming. The finale elicits an interesting and subversive fan theory.

Departure

The Umbrella Academy, based on Gabriel Bá and Gerard Way’s best-selling comic book series of the same name, threw fans for a serious loop, as season one’s finale departed from the comics’ original plot. It possibly created a time loop for the Hargreeves family.

While some fans of the comics may find this departure to be a bit of an annoyance, most seem to be excited by the change. This provides both a reason to watch the series and allows Netflix to build anticipation for the second season. The change has spawned a multitude of new fan theories.

A Time Loop

The most popular theory so far is that the heroes are stuck in a time loop, destined to fail again and again. This theory actually makes a good deal of sense and there’s plenty of evidence to support it.

In the cliffhanger finale, we see the siblings fail to prevent the end of the world, though they seem to fail in a different way than they did in the future Five visited. Could it be, though, that they didn’t fail at all? Or that they were supposed to fail in this particular way?

Sir Reginald And Mom

One particular detail stands out that has not yet been explained. How did Sir Reginald know so much about these children? He knew when they were born, the circumstances surrounding their births, and even seems to know more about their abilities than they do. He even seems to know a good deal about time travel. This is made apparent when he argues with Five about the dangers of time travel.

Also, did you happen to notice what Mom was stitching together with her embroidery hoop? She was stitching an image of the moon in pieces— the same moon Sir Reginald had One guarding. This seems to be more than just a bit of foreshadowing. Have the Hargreeves and Mom been there before? Are they from a different timeline themselves? Who knows? Hopefully, we’ll find the answers in season two!
