Why Tyrion Lannister Should Sit On The Iron Throne In Season 8

HBO has finally released the premiere date for the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones. On April 14th, we will finally get to see what happens to the last of our beloved characters before they face and either conquer or succumb to the Army of the Dead. While many highborn have made their claim to the Iron Throne, it’s time someone considers an unlikely choice: Tyrion Lannister. Here are the top five reasons we think Tyrion should take the throne in season eight.

Tyrion Is One Of The Wisest Men In Westeros

Tyrion is arguably one of the most clever characters we see throughout the GoT saga. In the very first season, Jon Snow asks Tyrion why he reads so much. Tyrion replies, “My brother has his sword, King Robert has his warhammer and I have my mind… and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone if it is to keep its edge.” Tyrion is well educated and street smart, surviving multiple attempts on his life through words alone. And, let’s not forget the time he slaughtered over half of Stanis Baratheon’s army at the Blackwater without shooting a single arrow or drawing a sword.

Tyrion Cares For The People

Unlike the rest of the ruthless Lannisters, Tyrion is genuinely concerned for the fates of the people of Westeros. He has always had a place in his heart for “cripples and bastards and broken things.” Unlike his sister and father’s bloodlust for the sake of the Lannister legacy, Tyrion is fair and just and respects both the common people and the highborn.

Tyrion Has Evaded His Own Death And Saved Others

Tyrion has survived more attempts on his life than almost any other character in the show. He saved both himself and Catelyn Stark from a raider attack in season two and survived the unjust trial of Lysa Arryn with the help of his trusted sellsword Bronn. Tyrion created his own army from the Hill Giants who wanted to kill him and even convinced Daenerys (who is not shy about ridding the world of her enemies) to make him her Hand.

Tyrion Has Real Ruling Experience

The only king we see with any real-world royal experience is King Robert, who was much more interested in hunting, drinking, and cracking jokes than he was with politics. However, Tyrion has ruled and succeeded many times as Hand of the King and Queen to Joffrey and Daenerys. He held Mereen successfully (for the most part) while Daenerys was with the Dothraki, and was the influencer of basically every wise decision made under Joffrey’s rule.

He Has The Highborn Claim

Strangely enough, though Tyrion has had a distaste for most of his family since the show’s beginning, his most promising claim to the throne is in his heritage. The Lannisters were the leading dynasty before Aegon the Conqueror took over and named them Wardens of the West. With his sister on the throne, Tyrion may be next in the line of succession unless Jamie or Daenerys and Jon can get to it first.
