Tyrese Gibson Will Play R&B Icon Teddy Pendergrass On The Big Screen

Before becoming an actor, Tyrese Gibson first made an impact in the entertainment industry with his music. Now, he’s getting back to his R&B roots with his next role. The star is set to play late R&B icon Teddy Pendergrass in an upcoming biopic under Warner Bros. Studios.

Back To The Music

Recently, on the last day of Black History Month, it was announced that Warner Bros. had acquired the rights to Pendergrass’ life story. Not only would the late singer’s story be brought to the big screen but Gibson would be playing him.

The actor is excited to take on this heavy role. “I am honored to take this journey. This is the role that I feel I was born to play,” Gibson said in a statement. “Teddy Pendergrass embraced me and before he passed, put the responsibility on my shoulders to tell his story. Being here in this time and in this space and moment… is an answered prayer. Teddy, I just hope we make you, your wife and family proud… Here we go!”

An Unforgettable Life

Pendergrass took the industry by storm in the early 1970s as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and then as a solo artist. However, his career and life took a turn after a tragic and almost fatal car crash in 1982. That accident would forever change his life, paralyzing him from the chest down.

The singer struggled to recover from the accident and even had to learn to sing all over again. However, he victoriously came back to the stage in 1985 and performed until his retirement in 2007. Pendergrass died three years later, leaving behind decades of classic R&B music for the old and young.

A Superstar Team

Gibson will not only star as Pendergrass but he will also serve as a producer through his company Voltron Pictures. He will work alongside executive producers Lee Daniels and Donald De Line. Pendergrass’ widow, Joan Pendergrass, will also be an executive producer and creative consultant.

Though there aren’t many plot details or a set director, Little Marvin will develop the screenplay. With the fresh announcement, there is no idea of when the movie will begin filming. However, fans are hopeful that this team will do Pendergrass justice.

In celebration of his life and his career, here is one of the singer’s classic tracks!
