Trump Blasts Nordstrom For Dropping Ivanka’s Brand

Published

President Trump blasted luxury store chain Nordstrom for dropping his daughter Ivanka’s clothing line for unsubstantiated reasons. Using both his official and personal twitter handles, Trump said that Ivanka Trump is a great woman and it is very unfortunate that she had to be treated that way. White house spokesperson Sean Spicer also criticized Nordstrom’s move terming it as an attack on the President’s policies.

However, this did not go down well with many critics who accused Trump of using the president’s office to benefit his business empire and his children’s businesses. Nordstrom on the other hand also insisted that their action was based on dwindling sales of Ivanka Trump’s wares.

Ethics experts who served past Democratic and Republican administrations also say that Donald Trump’s move to use a white house platform to address a personal issue was both troublesome and unprecedented for a president. They say that the president’s move was abuse of public office for personal gains. Others also add that it was misuse of power because the official tweet is very clear-the luxury store is persona non grata with the federal government.

To make matters even worse for Trump’s Administration, many states including California where Nordstrom operates have unfair competition laws that could be used to sue the government. Nordstrom can easily go to court if it feels their image was being tainted by an unfair attack.

Ivanka Trump ran a jewelry and clothing venture bearing her real name, plus other organizations including the Trump Organization, before saying she would quit when Donald Trump was sworn in officially as the president of the United States. Her father’s various comments and contentious actions have triggered boycott efforts by critics and even prompted some consumers to stop dealing with his businesses.

Donald Trump, who was sworn as the president of United States of America on Jan 20, 2017, refused to sell off all his ventures despite demands by many that he does so to avoid conflicts of interests. He only agreed to relinquish control to his 2 oldest sons but would still maintain legal ownership of his business empire. But experts say this move does very little to address potential conflicts as he would still be aware of what businesses he owns such as his hotels and golf courses and he would still continue to gain from them. In addition his chain of companies are still shrouded in secrecy as he has declined to release all his tax returns which tax experts say would provide a clear view of all his business interests.
