on

Over the years, American Horror Story has brought some of the craziest looking characters ever on our TV screen. With the help of award-winning makeup artists and wardrobe stylists, the actors on the show look completely unrecognizable. We look at how some of your favorite stars manage to showcase their unique characters on screen.

Denis O’Hare In Drag

On Hotel, Denis O’Hare’s portrayal of Liz Taylor earned massive praise. Creator Ryan Murphy was in awe with one dress. “I always dress for rehearsal, and I was wearing this long, flowing chiffon cape and Ryan loved it. Because he saw me walking in that number, he got an idea for a low angle shot of me walking down the hotel halls with the robe behind me flowing,” O’Hare told Yahoo.

Frances Conroy, Or Should We Say “Francais” Conroy

For her work as Myrtle Snow in Coven, Frances Conroy gained an Emmy nomination in 2014. In order to get into the role, the actress studied fashion editor, Diana Vreeland. Aside from watching YouTube videos, she watched the documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel. “I bought the documentary, which is a brilliant piece of work, and I watched it—I don’t even know how many times—to study her, to watch her mouth as she speaks, to listen to her accent because she was born and raised in Paris and then came to New York as a 10-year-old,” she told Huffington Post.

Evan Peters, The (Unoriginal) Zombie Boy

Evan Peters has made multiple transformations throughout the series. One of his most memorable (and controversial) involved him wearing skull makeup. Canadian artist Rick Genest, who was originally known as Zombie Boy, contacted FX about possible copyright infringement. The situation, which was kept under wraps, was settled for an undisclosed amount of money.

Lady Gaga, But Who Really Knows What She Actually Looks Like

In Roanoke, Lady Gaga transforms into the immortal witch, Scáthach. Many fans have been questioning her character’s overall place in the world. Ryan Murphy revealed to Huffington Post that she is the original Supreme. Fortunately, the character is slated to make a return. “We’re going to do a return to the ‘Coven’ season in some capacity, so that character will be further explored then,” he said.

Grace Gummer, Are You A Lizard Person?

During Freak Show, Grace Gummer’s character Penny transforms into The Astounding Lizard Girl. Her tattoos were done with the help of AFX Studio. “All of the tattoos were custom fit to her face through a process of casting. There was a full-face prosthetic and a full-neck prosthetic, [and] it’s like a water transfer process, but it has to be glued underneath to stay on all day,” makeup artist Eryn Krueger Mekash told MTV.
