Everything We Know About ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (Including Iceman’s Return)

Top Gun

Top Gun was the number one blockbuster in the summer of ’86, and it is making its return to screens very soon. With Tom Cruise reprising his role and a new director taking the wheel, Top Gun: Maverick is expected to be one of the biggest movies of 2020. However, Tom Cruise isn’t the only Top Gun star fans should look forward to seeing back in the pilot’s seat. Here’s what we know about the cast so far, and why you should plan to be in theatres for the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick.

What We Know About Top Gun: Maverick So Far

The Top Gun sequel is rumored to center around Tom Cruise’s Maverick and his mentor relationship with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (played by Miles Teller), the son of Goose from the first film. No other details on the plot have been released; however, the first photos from the set were posted on Twitter in May 2018 when filming first began. The filming primarily took place in San Diego, which means the film likely is set at the Top Gun Academy like the original. Taking over for the late Tony Scott is director Joseph Kosinski, known for his impressive work on Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, and Only the Brave. The sequel was originally supposed to be released in the summer of 2019, but the date was pushed back due to the complexity of filming some of the flight scenes. The premiere of Maverick is scheduled for June 26th, 2020. Original Top Gun fans will be surprised to see this character return to the Academy along with Maverick and his new student.

Who Will Be In Top Gun 2?

In addition to Tom Cruise’s Maverick, another original Top Gun star will be returning. That star is none other than Tom Kazansky, a.k.a. the “Iceman.” Cruise and Val Kilmer (who played Iceman) will be the only two returning actors in the film, and many on the internet are already trying to predict how their storylines will be developed. In the original movie, Iceman was Maverick’s rival turned best friend, and the two pilots helped push each other to greatness. It’s unclear what their relationship will be like in the upcoming film, whether they remained friends or have an estranged relationship in the current day. Since Top Gun, Kilmer has been in several notable films including Tombstone, Heat, Batman Forever, and The Prince of Egypt. Other impressive casting selections include Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Lewis Pullman, Glen Powell, and Manny Jacinto.

What We’ll Find Out In Top Gun 2

Val Kilmer’s Iceman was a smart, talented, and dedicated pilot in the original movie with nothing but passion for his military career. Fans are eager to find out what happened with his career after the original film just as much as they’re excited to see Maverick. Many are also excited to see modern aircraft in the movie. Since the armed forces have gone through several evolutions since the movie’s original filming, there is significant debate on which fighter jets and other military technology will be featured. The U.S. Navy and Air Force have even started a Twitter debate on which jets will be featured in the film. The U.S. Air Force Twitter called for a change of pace in the new movie, tweeting to the U.S. Navy that, “If Maverick really had a need for speed, he could hop into one of our F-15E Strike Eagles! #DYK: They have a top speed of 1,875 miles per hour.” No matter what, viewers won’t be disappointed, as the new director is well-known for his impressive action filming and CGI. In less than a year, you will be able to relive their love for the original Top Gun and enjoy a storyline that is sure to live up to its predecessor.
