Homeless Man Uses Money from Begging to Buy Flowers for Manchester Memorial

A familiar face in St. Ann’s Square in Manchester was among the many who laid flowers to the shrine in memory of the 22 dead in the May 22 terror attack at an Ariana Grande concert in the British city. Locals, however, could only shake their heads in wonder.

After all, Tommy was a homeless man who could have better spent any money he earned begging for his meal and clothes, rather than flowers for virtual strangers.

Tommy, who did not give his full name for the interview, said that he saw a spike in his earnings due to the influx of people paying tribute to the dead and dozens injured.

Just a day after the bombing, a stranger gave him £5. He then rushed to buy a bunch of flowers for the shrine. To date, he already laid down seven bunches of flowers for a grand total of £40, which could have bought him 40 cheeseburgers at McDonald’s.

“I’ve lost a lot of people in my life but a tragedy like this has hit me personally,” said Tommy. “For something like this to happen, for someone to be able to go that far and take innocent people, children – I just don’t get it.”

On the night of the terror attack, Tommy ran to the scene to find out if he could do something to help. But for now, laying down flowers is the best thing he could think of to show respect for the dead and their families.

A suicide bomber blew himself up during Ariana Grande’s concert in Manchester Arena.  The terror attack immediately killed 22 people and 116 concert fans wounded. Grande escaped unscathed and the American singer is going to be part of the fundraising concert for the victims of the bomb.

Parish members praised the generosity of Tommy as he ignored his own problems to empathize with people he doesn’t know.
