Tom Hiddleston On His Character Loki In ‘Thor’ and ‘Avengers’

Tom Hiddleston

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the most beloved and successful movie franchises of all time.  This popularity could be attributed in no small part to the franchise’s amazing cast of interesting and powerful characters.  From the armored suit-wearing genius, Tony Stark (AKA Iron Man), to the mad titan, Thanos, the MCU has no shortage of awesome characters.  Oftentimes superhero movies may be somewhat black and white in their classification of characters, marking some heroes and other villains.  However, the MCU does have some characters who don’t fit quite so cleanly into these labels.  One such character is the beloved god of mischief, Loki.

The brother of Thor, one of the founding members of the Avengers team, Loki made his first appearance in 2011’s Thor.  Loki at the start of this movie, was on pretty good terms with his brother but ended up becoming the movie’s villain.  He since flip-flopped between bad and good before his life was finally ended while on the side of good in last year’s Avengers: Infinity War (Some fans theorize he is actually still alive but that is a topic for another time).  Loki is a very popular character and he has brought significant success to the actor who brings him to life, Tom Hiddleston.  Born in 1981 in London, England, Tom Hiddleston is most well known for his portrayal of the beloved god of mischief.

Relationship With Kenneth Branagh

Although he had appeared in one movie before, Tom’s role as Loki could be said to be the breakthrough in his acting career.  According to Tom, he largely has the movie’s director, Kenneth Branagh to thank for his success.  In a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter, Tom was asked about his connection with Branagh.  He said “It had a life-changing effect on me. It happened quite organically, almost by accident. He saw me in a Shakespeare production in a theater in London, then asked me to perform with him in the television series Wallander for the BBC. We then did a Chekhov play in the West End, and then he cast me as Loki in the first Thor film. So actually we ended up spending about 12 months working together in different media.”  Looking here, Tom for sure seems to be quite appreciative of Branagh who as he said, had a life-changing effect on him.  It is always interesting how many actors appear to be found “almost by accident.” as Tom Hiddleston puts it.  Soon after this in the interview, Tom talked mentioned that he really looked up to Branagh and learned quite a bit from him.

Thoughts On His Role As Loki

Towards the end of his interview, Hiddleston had this to say about his iconic role: “It is a constant source of surprise and delight that these films have connected with people. I knew he was a complex figure. Intelligent yet vulnerable. Angry and lost and broken and witty. I thought it was an amazing opportunity and it’s grown into this network of movies. I could never have expected it. I feel very fortunate that this character has connected with people.”  Judging by this quote, Tom appears to be very happy with the role he’s gotten to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What Is Tom Doing Now?

Since his breakthrough as Loki, Tom Hiddleston has starred in several other movies and shows, his first lead role beyond the god of mischief being in the 2017 movie, Kong: Skull IslandHe is currently set to further his role as Loki in 2021 as the main character of the aptly named Disney+ show, Loki.
