See Tom Hanks Transform Into Mr. Rogers In This First Glimpse Photo

Won’t you be his neighbor? Tom Hanks is set to play beloved children’s TV host Fred Rogers in an upcoming film, and Hanks is truly getting into character.

An Amazing Transformation

In a first look photo from the set, Hanks and Rogers look pretty similar. Sitting outside of his trailer,  Hanks dons Rogers’ signature red sweater, along with a dress shirt and tie, slacks, and sneakers. Hanks is also sporting grey hair and eyebrows to match Rogers’ appearance.

Variety

The image is from the upcoming biographical drama about Rogers’ work and impact. The film is untitled as of right now, but production began in September 2018. Hanks himself originally signed on to play Rogers in January of the same year.

Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood

Hanks is a part of an ensemble cast that includes Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson, and Chris Cooper. The film is based on the real friendship between the TV host and journalist Tom Junod. Junod (Rhys) is assigned to profile Rogers, which he is reluctant to do at first. However, Rogers’ kindness and compassion ultimately win Junod over, and the journalist ends up with a new, positive outlook on life.

Church Militant

The film is being directed by Marielle Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl) with a script developed by Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue. It’s also being produced by Youree Henley, Marc Turtletaub, and Peter Saraf. The untitled movie is set to hit theaters on October 19, 2019.

High Hopes

There is much anticipation for the film, though Heller has made it perfectly clear what this movie is about. “[This] movie is…. not a biopic. I disliked that when it got announced it was characterized as such. It’s really not,” the director shared in an interview. “It’s a movie that’s largely focused on a reporter and [Mr. Rogers’] relationship to his life, and how [the reporter’s] whole world changes when coming in contact with Fred Rogers.”

The film about the treasured TV icon is coming to theaters a year after the critically acclaimed documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? With legendary actor Hanks leading the way, this new film is anticipated to do very well.
