Titanic

Over 100 years after the sinking of the Titanic, a replica of the ship will be setting sail. The Titanic II, originally announced in 2012, will make its maiden voyage in the next few years with plans to cross the same path as its doomed predecessor.

The New Titanic

After years of delays due to finances, plans for this replica ship have been revived. Australian businessman and chairman of Blue Star Line, Clive Palmer, first made the announcement. The new ship, appropriately titled the Titanic II, will cost about $500 million to build and will be able to hold 2,400 passengers and 900 crew members. It will reportedly look exactly like the Titanic but will have plenty of lifeboats and, of course, more modern navigation and radar equipment. Though originally set to sail in 2018, the Titanic II will sail in 2022, 110 years after the original. The plan is for the ship to travel from Dubai to the original port of the Titanic in Southampton, U.K. It will then make its way across the Atlantic Ocean. “The ship will follow the original journey, carrying passengers from Southampton to New York,” Palmer shared in a statement. “But she will also circumnavigate the globe, inspiring and enchanting people while attracting unrivaled attention, intrigue, and mystery in every port she visits.” Of course, that means that passengers will cross over the very spot where hundreds lost their lives so many years ago.

A Tragic Voyage

The original Titanic was a beauty to behold. The ship was the biggest created during that era, measuring in at 269 meters in length. It traveled at 26 miles per hour making it faster than any other vessel at the time. If the mere size of the ship wasn’t enough, the inside of the ship was even more luxurious with grand bedrooms, dining halls and lounges for the upper class. With its size and speed, the ship was claimed to be unsinkable. Carrying over 2,000 passengers and crew members, the Titanic set sail on sail on its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912, from Southampton and was set to arrive in New York. However, the trip would be the first and the last. While crossing the Atlantic Ocean on April 15th, the Titanic hit an iceberg after multiple warnings. The iceberg opened the side of the ship, damaging six of the vessel’s watertight compartments and flooding five of them in an hour’s time. There was no doubt by the ship’s architect, Thomas Andrews, that the boat would sink. What made things worse is that there were only sixteen wooden lifeboats and four collapsible boats on the boat. The boats were only enough to carry 1,178 people. That was only one-third of Titanic’s total capacity, though more than legally required. It slowly but surely sank, and over 1,500 passengers on board lost their lives. The unthinkable tragedy has spawned a hit movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet and has also sparked other copies of the grand ship.

Controversial Decisions

There are also other replicas being built of the Titanic including one being built by China for $145 million that will be docked in a reservoir in the Qijang River. Tourists will also be able to dive to the wreck of the original Titanic for a whopping $105,129 a person through OceanGate. Concierge firm The Bluefish also plans to conduct trips to the Titanic. Of course, some believe that these replicas and trips to the actual shipwreck are disrespectful to the tragedy. However, Steve Sims, founder of The Bluefish, told CNN Travel that he doesn’t see diving to the wreck as inappropriate. “The people who tend to want to go are very respectful. And you can only do eight to nine civilians on a ship. So you’re not getting a bunch of giggling teenagers who are spending over $100,000 to go along and get selfies,” he said. Time will only tell if people take this voyage on the Titanic II as seriously.
