NBC’s ‘This Is Us’ Coming Back To TV For Three More Seasons

Updated

on

Talk about a Big Three! NBC has announced that its hit drama, This Is Us, has been renewed with a pretty sweet deal. The show isn’t just coming back for one more year. Instead, it’s going to be on for another three seasons which will give fans plenty of time with the Pearson family.

A Huge Announcement

In a rare deal, This Is Us was picked up for another three seasons by NBC, keeping it on the air through 2022. Each of the upcoming seasons will have 18 episodes. Though the show’s ratings went down with the third season, it still averaged 13.8 million viewers and holds the title of the No. 1 Entertainment Series on a broadcast or cable network for the 18-49 demographic. “In a television landscape with nearly 500 original scripted series, there are very few, if any, that have the critical and cultural impact of This Is Us and we couldn’t be more proud to bring fans three more seasons of a show that so well represents the NBC brand,” read a statement from Lisa Katz and Tracey PakostaPresidents of Scripted Programming at NBC Entertainment. “A huge thank you and congratulations to our executive producers, cast and crew who reach new heights every week with the show’s inventive and compelling storytelling.”

Wrapping Up?

The series follows the lives of siblings Kevin, Kate, and Randall (known as the “Big Three”), along with their parents Jack and Rebecca Pearson. Dedicated fans of the show have been eagerly watching the Pearson family’s story through flashbacks, flash-forwards, and present moments since the show premiered in Fall 2016. This Is Us stars Sterling K. Brown, Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, and Susan Kelechi Watson in an ensemble cast. Showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Dan Fogelman previously did say that the hit show could possibly end after season six, as they had a finale planned for “about three seasons in the future.” Aptaker shared in an interview with Deadline, “From day one, Dan came in with his master plan for the big picture stuff of the show and said, ‘I think this is where we end up. I think this is what I know. Let’s figure out the rest together.’ So this deal might possibly be in preparation for the end of the show, but the showrunners have promised that viewers will find the series finale “elegant” and “satisfying.”

What’s To Come

For now, the immediate focus is on season four which will premiere in the fall. The season will explore Rebecca (Moore)’s past after losing Jack (Ventimiglia), especially at a time when their kids have graduated from high school and are moving on to new stages in life. Fans will continue to see the progression of Randall (Brown) and Beth (Watson)’s marriage as they plan to move to Philadelphia for Randall’s tenure as city councilman, with Beth opening up her own dance studio. The show will also continue to show current life events in the Pearson family, like Kate (Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) being new parents to a baby boy born prematurely, as well as Kevin (Hartley) recovering from a devastating breakup.

There will also be a look at Rebecca in the future, who was shown in a hospital bed at the end of season three looking very frail as an older Randall looks on. A surprise visitor was Jack’s younger brother, Nicky (Griffin Dunne) sitting by Rebecca’s bedside looking healthy and sober. Needless to say, season four will be an interesting one. “Fans are going to like the way some things go, they’re going to have questions and not like the way other things go,” Fogelman admitted to PEOPLE, adding that he hopes fans feel “shell-shocked, drained, exhausted and hopefully happy.”
