There are 2 types of people in the world: Sweet or Savory. What does food preference say about you?

Remember all those “bonding” questions we were asked at least at one point in our life? Coke or Pepsi? Beach or Mountains vacation? Dog or cat? Coffee or Tea? (By the way, we can’t be friends if you choose tea). Well, I have another one of those questions and the answer apparently says a lot about your personality. Which do you prefer to snarf down? Savory foods (think burgers, pasta, pizza) or sweet foods (basically anything you feel guilty about having more than one of)?

I for one am craving a nice juicy cheeseburger at the end of the day with some chips or fries but my roommate would rather stuff her face with a bowl of ice cream or cookies after a long day of work. We do have different personalities, though….interesting. I guess there are two types of people in the world: sweet or savory.

Obviously, it is possible to like both as if you didn’t, you would not be eating normal foods for your three meals a day but you will always prefer one over the other. Think about it this way, if you are on a diet and can only have one not so healthy meal a day, would you pick a slice of pizza or a piece of chocolate cake? What comfort food do you choice after a breakup? Chips or candy? All the answers to these questions, according to science, will tell people what kind of person you are, so choose wisely.

When the American Psychological Association did a study on 55 college students to see if there was a link between a bitter 0r sweet personality and a preference for sweet or savory foods. They asked each study to give their opinion on 50 different types of food, spanning over the five major food categories: sour, sweet, bitter, spicy and salty. They were also given a test to see what their agreeable level was. The results showed that when you call someone “sweet” for being nice and friendly, it is related to eating sweet foods. I guess you are what you eat.

The students who had a preference for sweet foods had a high level of agreeableness, meaning they are more likely to be caring, kind, cooperative, and basically the kind of people you want to be friends with. On the other hand, those who preferred the nonsweet foods aren’t as approachable and compassionate as their sweet counterparts.

They also did another study on a different group of 55 college students where, at random, they were given a piece of milk chocolate, a bland cracker, or nothing (control group). Then they asked each study to help a professor complete a task. They found that those students who got to eat the sweet food were more willing to help the professor out compared to the students that got the cracker or even those that received nothing.

It is still unclear as to why your preference for sweet or savory foods determines your personality. Maybe it is the same reason why coffee turns me into a sociable member of society. Who knows, all I know I will be eating sweet foods before my job interviews. Go show this article to someone next time they hate on you for eating too many sweet foods, they are probably a savory person.
