With news of The Office moving to NBC’s streaming platform Peacock, television giant Viacom has been worried about the show’s prospects on their own networks. After all, the company wants to keep the show airing in syndication for as long as it can. Thankfully, Viacom and NBCUniversal recently inked a deal to extend syndication rights to 2025.
Gone In 2025
This deal allows The Office to air reruns on Comedy Central until 2021. The network acquired the series back in 2017. To celebrate the acquisition, the network held a 24-hour marathon of the show in January 2018. “Keeping the exclusive rights to ‘The Office’ through 2021 is a coup for Comedy Central and Viacom. Since acquiring it, we’ve reinvigorated the franchise on linear, drawing big audiences throughout our full day schedule,” Comedy Central GM Tanya Giles said in a press release. “It’s also been a key lead-in to help drive viewers to our own original, acclaimed comedies. We’re so excited to keep it on our air that we wouldn’t even trade it for an iPod.”
After leaving the network, the show will be featured on channels on Viacom Media Networks through 2025. This means The Office can land on stations such as Nick at Nite or TV Land. Parks and Recreation will air on Comedy Central through 2024.
Say Goodbye, Netflix
Back in June, NBCUniversal revealed The Office would leave Netflix at the end of 2020. “We’re sad that NBC has decided to take The Office back for its own streaming platform — but members can binge watch the show to their hearts’ content ad-free on Netflix until January 2021,” Netflix said on Twitter. Netflix added the popular sitcom on its service back in 2011. Over time, the show became one of the most-watched series on the service. “I believe that Netflix has helped make The Office extraordinarily popular, and more popular than it was when it was on the network,” NBC chairman Robert Greenblatt told New York Magazine. “And they pay us a lot of money for it. If we knew how popular it was going to be before they made the deal, we would have asked for more money from them!”
Netflix tried keeping The Office on its service by offering $90 million yearly for the rights. NBC Universal outbid them to grab the exclusive rights for $100 million yearly. NBCUniversal and Netflix weren’t the only ones looking to grab The Office. Hulu, Apple, and Amazon wanted to have the show to boost their own services.
Arriving On Peacock Soon
NBC’s streaming service Peacock launches in April 2020, and they’re gearing up for The Office‘s grand entrance. “’The Office’ has become a staple of pop-culture and is a rare gem whose relevance continues to grow at a time when fans have more entertainment choices than ever before. We can’t wait to welcome the gang from Dunder Mifflin to NBCUniversal’s new streaming service,” Chairman of NBCUniversal Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises Bonnie Hammer said in a press release. The Office will join other popular NBC shows such as Superstore, Saturday Night Live, and Fraiser.
While The Office will return, rumors of a reboot have been swirling online. Peacock already has forthcoming reboots of Battlestar Galactica, Punky Brewster, and Saved by the Bell. The Office star Steve Carell has an opposing view on a potential reboot. “I just don’t think that’s a good idea, it might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted ten years ago,” Carell told Esquire.
For now, fans of The Office have until 2021 to binge the show on Netflix. NBCUniversal can expect many of them to subscribe to Peacock when the time finally comes.
