Thai Chef Tells Gordon Ramsay He Makes Bad Pad Thai

Gordon Ramsay

Gordon Ramsay is known around the world not only for his impressive chef’s resume, but for his equally memorable personality. Ramsay is both a competitor and a perfectionist. He pushes his staff and contestants on his cooking shows to reach the same level of skill he strives for every day. While this often results in an onslaught of colorful language and insults, he is able to mold master chefs with his tough love. This over-the-top personality has earned him a reputation as a master critic as well as a chef. He has even taken to social media to mock the food photos on Instagram and Twitter, oftentimes at user request. However, Ramsay recently experienced a taste of his own medicine during a trip to Southwest London, where a Thai chef was less than impressed by his cooking.

Gordon Ramsay Prepares A Sacred Meal In Southwest London

As one of the world’s most famous chefs, Gordon Ramsay is able to travel and serve as a guest chef in many renowned restaurants. One such visit was to Southwest London where he was invited to cook at the Blue Elephant, one of London’s finest Thai restaurants. The Blue Elephant, in addition to serving wealthy London clientele, cooks the daily meal for a group of monks at a Thai Buddhist monastery. The monks are only allowed one meal a day, so Blue Elephant prepares something exquisite for them to look forward to. The head chef, Chef Cheng, met with Gordon Ramsay to prepare the monks a pad thai entree along with several other traditional Thai appetizers. Pad Thai is the national dish of Thailand, and therefore something Chef Cheng has spent much of his career perfecting. He believed Ramsay had the experience and prowess to pull it off. However, Chef Cheng was sorely disappointed by the results.

Chef Cheng Does Not Approve Of Gordon’s Pad Thai

The clip below shows Gordon Ramsay as he is invited to the Blue Elephant restaurant to cook the pad thai entree. He prepares a quick pad thai featuring fresh prawns. As the head chef, Cheng asks Ramsay to sample some before serving it to the monks. Immediately after he takes a bite, Cheng grimaces. Both viewers and Ramsay can tell he is displeased, but he is respectful and does not criticize immediately. He then asks Ramsay if he wants his input. Ramsay of course eagerly asks the chef for his opinion. Cheng then replies with a hint of disdain, “This is not Pad Thai at all. Pad Thai has to be sweet, sour, and salty.” Ramsay’s face falls in disappointment. He then tries to defend himself, to which the chef replied, “For you… but not for me.” He shakes his head while Ramsay gawks in disbelief. Chef Cheng does not let up on his criticisms. He expected the best, and viewers can tell he is disappointed to serve the inferior pad Thai to the monks.

Will Ramsay Learn From His Mistakes?

Gordon Ramsay is no stranger to criticism. In fact, he receives quite a lot of criticism not only for his restaurants but for his bold and brash personality. However, Ramsay takes these critiques in stride and never lets them get in the way of his learning. Since the experience in Southwest London, Ramsay has made a sincere effort to learn more about foods of other cultures. His latest show Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted featured both world travel and exceptional cuisine. He traveled to Peru, New Zealand, Morrocco, Hawaii, Laos, and Alaska to study international cuisine firsthand. The mini-series recently wrapped up August 25, 2019, but it taught Ramsay a lot about the world of food. You can watch Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted on Hulu and other streaming services.
