Terry Crews Reveals ‘White Chicks 2’ Is Happening

Updated

on

It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years since the release of White Chicks. The comedy, which was directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, helped Terry Crews become a household name. Now, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine says that everyone’s ready for round two.

It’s Not Just A Bag

While appearing on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, Crews was asked about a potential sequel. The star gave a grand answer to please fans of the first film. “I actually got with Shawn (Wayans) and he was like ‘Man we doing it, we’re getting it going’, 15 years ago as of this month! I’m staying in shape just for this movie,” he told the host.

Days later, he appeared on The Talk to discuss being on the cover of Muscle and Fitness. As expected, the hosts wanted to go deeper into this possible White Chicks sequel. In the first film, Crews’ character Latrell Spencer belted out Vanessa Carlton’s hit “A Thousand Miles.” The hosts asked what song Spencer would sing today, and the answer was quite hysterical. “I think the modern day equivalent to that might be Carly Rae Jepsen ‘Call Me Maybe.’ But I would definitely do the whitest white girl song you would ever see. But white girls are singing gangster right now, you know what I mean? So it might be a little different, it might have a little rap thing in there. However we would do it, it’d be great,” Crews said.

Hold My Poodle

Released in 2004, White Chicks became a surprise hit at the box office with $113 million earned. This became one of Sony’s highest grossing films for the year. White Chicks also featured an uncredited appearance by future Lost star Evangeline Lilly. At the 2004 BET Comedy Awards, the film won for Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Directing. At the same ceremony, it was nominated for Outstanding Box Office Movie and Outstanding Lead Actor (Marlon Wayans). White Chicks was also nominated for Choice Movie of the Summer at the 2004 Teen Choice Awards.

A sequel was announced back in 2009, but it was canceled by Sony. In 2014, Marlon Wayans stated that a sequel would eventually happen. “I think people are scared that it’s 10 years removed. Overseas markets have changed and selling foreign isn’t as lucrative as it was for these types of movies. We’ll figure out the business and we’ll find a way to get it done because that sequel is a must,” he told The Grio.

Prior to Watch What Happens Live, Crews has been open with joining the sequel. “I’m staying in shape for White Chicks 2! I will never get out of shape — you know that, right? I will be 75 and say, ‘Here we go, I’m ready to go!’ I will never, ever get out of shape because that movie’s going to happen one day,” he told Us Weekly back in March.

Easy, White Chocolate

Before White Chicks 2 can start, their stars still have some unfinished business. Marlon Wayans, who plays Marcus/Tiffany, is currently in NYC shooting On The Rocks. Directed by Sofia Coppola, the film also stars Rashida Jones and Bill Murray. The film will be released exclusively through Apple in the near future.

Crews has plenty on his plate in the following months. He’s currently hosting season 14 of America’s Got Talent. Earlier this year, he hosted the spin-off series America’s Got Talent: The Champions. On the movie side of things, he’s lending his voice to Netflix’s The Willoughbys. Based on Lois Lowry’s children’s book of the same name, it will also feature Martin Short and Will Forte. Crews is also filming season seven of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
