Talk show hosts are some of the most charismatic, enjoyable people to watch on television. While it may seem like they have great chemistry with their guests, some hosts have revealed that they too, like the rest of us, struggle with excelling at their jobs. Whether someone was in a bad mood or one with which they had nothing in common, these guests and their interviewers just didn’t jive.
Conan Struggles With An Inebriated Abel Ferrara
Conan O’Brien is one of the most successful talk show hosts from the late ’90s and 2000s. However, he didn’t always have the best guests, including one unruly Abel Ferrara in 1996. The famed director was not only intoxicated during the interview, but tried to flee the scene before going on the air. O’Brien talked briefly about the interview on his show: “He [Ferrara] fled during the show, before his segment. He ran away, got on the elevator, and was out on the street running away, and Frank [the segment producer] gave chase.” They did finally catch him and brought him back to the set, but the interview didn’t go any more smoothly. Ferrara mumbled and slurred his speech, and fidgeted in his chair for most of the segment. O’Brien joked early on in the interview, “We’re going to get those Stallone subtitles in here.” When recounting the story, O’Brien was asked whether he thought Ferrara was intoxicated, to which he replied, “Yes. I mean, I’m sure. Or if not, he should have been.”
Craig Ferguson And Macy Gray Didn’t Have On-Screen Chemistry
Craig Ferguson, host of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, once appeared on Watch What Happens Live and was asked about his worst guest. After some careful thought, he revealed a surprising name: Macy Gray. Ferguson went on to explain why the interview wasn’t great: “I think she was in a bad mood that night. I don’t think she’s a bad person … and I was very new and I couldn’t handle it.” While Craig and Macy don’t have any personal beef, it seems they just couldn’t get in the rhythm of things on camera. While their lack of chemistry may have been less than exciting to watch, it certainly wasn’t as bad as this next talk show host’s blunder with his guest.
Jay Leno Is Not A Fan Of Reality T.V.
Jay Leno is one of the forefathers of late-night television. The Tonight Show With Jay Leno was one of NBC’s most successful talk shows; however, Leno didn’t love every guest he ever had on the show. In an interview with Graig Ferguson, Leno dished on what he called the most boring guest he ever had on his show: “I had one of these reality stars on. I’m talking to her like this, and I’m looking at the side of her head … I couldn’t be less interested. I’ve never seen this stupid reality show. I didn’t know what it was.” He was referring to Trista Sutter, the original star of The Bachelorette. Leno also said that after the show, he was approached by a woman who wanted to take a picture with him. He apparently did not even recognize Trista, who was trying to get a photo with him right after the interview. Leno admitted he didn’t realize who it was until he asked for her name. “It was a nightmare,” he said to Ferguson, who empathized with the star. Luckily for Jay, he now gets to interview people he finds nothing but fascinating, on his latest show Jay Leno’s Garage. If only other talk show hosts could be so lucky!
