Taika Waititi Isn’t Done With The Marvel Cinematic Universe Quite Yet

Published

on

Taika Waititi quickly became a household name last fall. The budding New Zealand director captivated audiences when he took the helm of Thor: Ragnarok. What should have been the dying gasps of the trilogy ended up breathing new life into the franchise.

Waititi’s Return is Inevitable

With several indie movies under his belt, Waititi selection for Thor 3 was a strange choice. But the MCU has a way of elevating little-known directors. With a $180 million budget, the film allowed the unusual director freedom to express himself. With James Gunn setting the bar with Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2, Waititi seamlessly worked in a similarly wacky style.

The director turned actor even incorporated himself using the beloved Korg. But what sets Waititi apart from other MCU directors is this: the audiences want him back.

A Potential Replacement for James Gunn

Following Disney’s dismissal of James Gunn, the future of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is up in the air. Production of the film was put on indefinite hold in August. But Gunn’s use of quirky editing and music set the stage for Waititi to take on Thor 3. So wouldn’t he be a great fit to take on another MCU franchise?

Even Chris Hemsworth has expressed his new found love for Thor and Waititi’s style. Since the Thor trilogy is officially over, there is no clear return for the actor or director following Avengers 4. However, Waititi has said he would enjoy directing Thor: Ragnarok 2 if it came about.

A “Secret Marvel Project”?

A lot of people are curious about a recent meeting between Marvel and Waititi. Speculation aside, many believe it is regarding the Guardians 3 job. However, following an interview with Radiotimes, Waititi’s affinity for Thor is certain. “I don’t really like any of the other characters,” he told the site.

No matter what happens in the end, the creators of the Marvel Cinematic Universe can be sure that the fans want Waititi back.
