Various social media accounts such as UberFacts and IFLScience have the power to make you think and laugh. While many of them tend to flourish on Twitter and Facebook, Instagram has seen a small share of its viral accounts.

One particular account has been bringing the laughter while saving countless lives in the process.

Swim dumb and you’re done

In December 2016, an account known as The Swim Reaper appeared on Instagram with the caption “Summer’s here. Time to get bizzaaaay! Make a bad call in the water and I’ll be seein’ ya.”

Since then, the profile has gained over 64,000 followers and counting. Each photo finds the figure lurking on the beach for its next potential victim.

Teaching them the right way

The Swim Reaper was created by Water Safety New Zealand and ACC to bring awareness to drowning. Yearly, New Zealand has around seen around 100 drowning deaths. Many of the casualties are intoxicated males.

“We decided to hit them a bit harder in a way they understand and can relate to, hopefully to make them stop and think and look out for each other,” said chief executive Jonty Mills.

A proud decrease

For its first year, the campaign has seen some progress. So far, a number of people that have died from drowning has dropped to 56. During their peak summer period, a number of casualties discovered was zero. The campaign was recently featured on the shortlist for the Facebook Awards. The Swim Reaper has seen a major boost outside of its target country with shares from around the world.

By delivering the message in a comedic fashion, they managed to get the point across. Thankfully, many people will now take serious precaution before going into the beach with some alcohol in their system.
