Anime Is Life

Anime films rarely get shown love at the Oscars. This year, Mirai was the surprise nominee in the Animated Feature category. Directed by Mamoru Hosoda, the film follows a boy traveling through time to meet relatives via a magical garden. This is the first anime to gain an Oscar nomination since 2014’s When Marnie Was There.

Crazy Rich Snub

Crazy Rich Asians was easily one of the most important films of 2018. Seeing a film with a predominantly Asian cast become a box office hit was a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, this film got shut out completely at the Oscars. As expected, fans of the film displayed their outrage on social media.

Warner Bros.

The Surprise Of Buster Scruggs

Many weren’t expecting Netflix’s The Ballad of Buster Scruggs to receive any accolades. Fortunately, the Coen Brothers film shocked everyone with three nominations. Its biggest nomination is for Best Original Song with “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings.” The film tells six intriguing tales of chaos in the Old West.

Netflix

Snub On Beale Street

If Beale Street Could Talk landed three nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Regina King. Unfortunately, this praised film didn’t earn the coveted Best Picture nomination. The film follows a woman looking to prove her husband’s innocence in a crime. This is based on the 1974 novel of the same name.

Annapurna Pictures

Can’t Dethrone The King

It wasn’t a shock that Black Panther was going to be a force at the Oscars. It becomes the first superhero movie to gain a Best Picture nomination. While this is fantastic, director Ryan Coogler got snubbed for Best Director. Coogler probably isn’t letting this get him down, though. His film earned an astonishing seven nominations.
