It’s not every day that superheroes get married. They’re too busy saving the world. But on September 1, 2019, Supergirl co-stars Melissa Benoist and Chris Wood tied the knot in an intimate ceremony just months after they announced their engagement. Take a look back at their “super” sweet romance.
‘Supergirl’ Is A Super Show
In October 2015, the superhero adventure series Supergirl, starring Benoist as Kara Zor-El, premiered on CBS. Benoist became the first woman to lead a prime-time superhero television series since Lynda Carter starred in Wonder Woman from 1975-79. Benoist, a former cast member of Fox’s Glee, was on her way to be a part of another smash hit, and she received generally positive reviews from critics.
The show’s second season moved to The CW and it has remained on the network since 2016. Supergirl has collaborated with a variety of other DC-inspired shows, including The Flash, and the show’s fifth season is set to premiere on October 6, 2019. The show originally focused on Kara learning how to be Supergirl. But now, according to Benoist, the show is evolving into something much bigger, and she couldn’t be more thrilled.
“What I’ve loved about it the most is that Kara this season (season five) has totally been coming into her own and learning how to be a woman,” Benoist said. “Last season, she learned how to be Supergirl. And, now, she’s coming into her own more as an adult and, obviously, balancing love with everything that goes with that, so I love it… [I] think it’s a really sweet thing that she’s learning about herself.”
Becoming A Super Couple
Benoist mentioned her character balances love with being a supergirl. It might have been challenging for Kara, but the actress had her own off-screen romance. For the show’s second season, Chris Wood joined the cast as Kara’s main love interest, Mon-El. Their romance was complicated, but it didn’t take long for the actors to realize they had their own chemistry.
Wood commented about his experience working with his both on- and off-screen girlfriend: “[Melissa and I have] found this nice pocket for the characters to live in. It was just so easy to play and she’s just so generous as an actress that she just keeps it rolling. She makes it easy.”
Their relationship was confirmed in March 2017 when Benoist and Wood were photographed kissing while vacationing in Mexico. Benoist made their relationship “Instagram official” two months later once she posted a photo of Wood exploring Lower Antelope Canyon in Arizona. Wood followed in her footsteps, sharing a picture of Benoist standing in front of a series of adobe homes.
Since then, they haven’t been afraid to share aspects of their relationship with their fans. They documented when they enjoyed a candlelit dinner, their vacations, having fun at game nights, attending award shows, and more. So, it didn’t come as a surprise to many fans when the couple announced their engagement in February 2019.
Benoist shared the news on Instagram with a cute post, in which the actress beamed at the camera while Wood gave her a kiss on the cheek. She wrote a simple caption: “Yes, yes, yes, it will always be yes.” Following their announcement, the couple said they weren’t going to have a long engagement. However, they never shared their wedding date with their fans.
Surprise! They’re Married!
The couple was very secretive about their nuptials. They kept their wedding plans under wraps, so it may have come as a shock when E! News first reported the pair exchanged wedding vows on Sunday, September 1. They married at a poolside wedding in Ojai, California, in front of family and friends, including a few of their Supergirl castmates. While there haven’t been any pictures shared from the wedding, judging from their Instagram accounts, the pictures will purportedly be as beautiful as their relationship.
