The Absolute Best Super Bowl Ads of 2017

Published

on

Most Super Bowls these days are centered around commercials, but this Sunday was a notable exception. With the Patriots and the Falcons putting on a show for the ages, most of us were forced to use the ad breaks for bathroom visits and heaping our plates with snacks. That’s a shame, because this year’s commercial crop was the most interesting one in a while. Here are the best Super Bowl ads you might have missed:

Budweiser: Born the Hard Way

Budweiser was one of many brands that chose to get political at this year’s Super Bowl ads. This story of Adolphus Busch and his quest to establish his own brewery is hard to read as anything other than a political statement on President Trump’s immigration policy. After all, it’s only been a week since the executive order was signed.

Audi: Daughter

Equal pay for women is a noble cause, but the message behind this ad seems a bit too heavy-handed and downbeat to produce the wanted effect. Plus, a lot of people thought that Audi was just using this controversial social issue for their own gains.

Hulu: My Name is Offred

Just when we thought we couldn’t get more excited about the upcoming adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, we got this slick-looking trailer featuring Elisabeth Moss as the titular handmaid. Unfortunately, dystopian future has seldom seemed this relevant.

Nintendo: Switch

For its first ever Super Bowl commercial, Nintendo decided to showcase what their new console can do. The new Legend of Zelda, Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are only some of the launch titles we are looking forward to.

84 Lumber: The Journey Begins

This story of a mother and daughter journeying across Mexico in an attempt to reach the United States was perhaps the most controversial ad of the night. The first cut also featured an image of a border wall, but broadcaster Fox decided to remove that part of the journey.

Kia: Journey

On a slightly more lighthearted journey, Melissa McCarthy discovers that saving whales and trees is not quite as simple as she thought. According to USA Today’s Super Bowl Ad Meter, this was the most successful commercial of the night.

Wix: Big Game First Spot

Secret agents have just laid waste to your carefully designed bistro? Not to worry! Wix.com makes starting from scratch and creating a “stunning” website as easy as pie. It’s easy to see why this was the most popular ad in the run-up to the Super Bowl.

Squarespace: Calling JohnMalkovich.com

This commercial reminds us of the importance of securing your domain before it’s too late. “Being John Malkovich” might not be as fresh in people’s minds as it used to be, but the fact that he really is a clothing designer now is a lovely little touch.

Which did you like best out of this year’s super bowl ads? Let us know in the comments.
