For a teacher, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing students off toward a better future. But for one Texan teacher in particular, her students’ gratitude and love are priceless rewards in the midst of a heartbreaking situation.

Having taught language arts at Tomball Junior High School in Texas for years, Kay Wistrand was recently told by doctors that there was an untreatable tumor in her spine. They later on revealed that it had spread to her lungs. Telling her that chemotherapy was no longer a viable option, doctors gave her approximately two to three years left to live.

Upon sharing her story with her class, Wistrand inspired some of her students to start a GoFundMe campaign for her. Mickey Nolen, the creator of the page says of her teacher that she is  “one of the best people I have ever had the opportunity to meet. She is an AMAZING English Language Arts teacher … And [she] is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. Mrs. Wistrand has loved all of her students so much for many years. We just want to return the favor for all of the hard work she has put in to teach the youth of our community.”

The campaign originally had a goal of $7,500 but as of February the money raised has reached close to $11,000. Since the tumors are already beyond chemotherapy, the funding is meant to somehow complete a few items on Wistrand’s bucket list, which she had once shared with her class in passing.

Nolen says: “She mentioned a trip to California, specifically the Redwood Forest. She also wishes to step foot in the Pacific Ocean, because she never has before.”
