Stranger Things fans simply adore actor Joe Keery. The Massachusetts native has delivered fantastic scenes as former jock Steve Harrington. His performance earned him a Teen Choice Award nomination for Choice Hissy Fit. While Keery’s known for his unique hair, he’s sporting a brand new haircut.
Debuting The New Hair
The actor showed off his new haircut at Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood. The luxurious restaurant was the setting for the Gabrielle Chanel Essence fragrance celebration. Keery came to the party with his girlfriend Maika Monroe. While attending the party, he ran into Stranger Things co-star Charlie Heaton, who plays Jonathan Byers.
Getting It Just Right
Keery’s hair is something many new Stranger Things viewers immediately notice. When it comes to getting it right, he avoids washing it daily. “I wash it probably every two or three days. On set—that’s the real preparation. There’s a whole process. Washing the hair at a specific time before coming in to shoot, and then a whole blowdrying routine, and then doing a thing to the back, and getting it cut a specific way,” Keery told GQ. “On set, the process is pretty lengthy. But in my normal, everyday life… most of the time, it totally looks like s–t.”
Keery also allows the wind to mess around with it. “Just getting up in the morning, having the windows down if you drive, not washing your hair as much as you’d think. You gotta extend the shelf life, do you know what I mean?,” he said on Good Mythical Morning.
For Keery’s first appearance on the show, his hair was in a completely different state. “We didn’t really figure it out until episodes two and three. In the first episode, my hair looks like I could be in the gang of the little kids; it’s a bowl-cut kind of thing,” he told Washington Square Journal. “We all were talking about it one day in the trailer and they tried it as a joke style, to see if it would go up. A lot of hair spray and a lot of meticulous grooming [was used]. They killed it. I look like one of my dad’s friends from his yearbook.”
Almost Got It Shaved Off?
In late 2017, Stranger Things co-star David Harbour gained a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In an Instagram post, he showed gratitude for getting nominated. “I tip my hat to you @goldenglobes for the nomination. My Christmas present came early this year. You got me feeling all the holiday feels,” Harbour said. Keery decided to have a laugh by putting his hair on the line at the awards ceremony. “If you win, David the Duffer’s [sic] get to shave my head,” Keery said in Harbour’s Instagram post. Fortunately for Keery, Harbour didn’t win at the Golden Globes. He did earn a Critics’ Choice Television Award days later in the same category.
Coming Next Summer
Keery will find himself on the big screen in next summer’s Free Guy. Starring Ryan Reynolds, the movie follows a bank teller discovering he’s in a video game. “I’ve come in and done maybe a couple weeks of work, and it’s like the big leagues. I feel like I’m playing with some real heavy hitters, and it’s a true learning experience and honor for me to just watch these other people work,” Keery told Daily Break. The film recently wrapped filming over the summer. There’s a great chance his new haircut was done specifically for the movie.
Free Guy also stars Taika Waititi, Channing Tatum, and Jodie Comer. The film is directed by Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy. Free Guy will hit theaters on July 3, 2020.
