Stranger Things fans, we have good news for you. On Sept. 30, the hit Netflix original series announced it is officially returning for a fourth season. You can rejoice, but there’s one big change: They’re not in Hawkins, Indiana anymore. What does this mean? What details do we know so far? Warnings: Spoilers ahead!
All About ‘Stranger Things 3’
Stranger Things 3, released on July 4, took fans on an amusement park ride where they had to hang on for dear life. For instance, the kids (Mike, Eleven, Dustin, Lucas, Will, and Max) are growing up and experiencing life changes as teenagers. They’re forced to go through puberty at the same time Hawkins, Indiana is changing due to a new supernatural force.
The third season improves on elements established in Stranger Things 2. Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour) investigate the local corruption. Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) track a vermin infestation while working at the Hawkins Post. Everyone’s favorite “bromance” couple, Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) and Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) investigate the Russian conspiracies, along with newcomer Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke).
At the same time, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) become close friends while discussing their boyfriends, and then worry over Max’s stepbrother, Billy (Dacre Montgomery). Billy has been possessed by a new version of the Mind Flayer from the Upside Down. He’s bodysnatching citizens in Hawkins and in the world of Stranger Things, this is never good news.
The teenagers, often led by Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), and adults eventually have to work together to combat the Mind Flayer and the Russians in Hawkins. Are they successful? Yes, but it comes at an unfortunate price with the potential loss of one of Stranger Things’ most beloved characters—Chief Hopper.
About The Ending
Stranger Things 3 was a rollercoaster of emotions, but nothing was as heartbreaking as the final scene when the Byers family decides to move away from Hawkins, bringing Eleven (now an orphan with Hopper’s “death”), with them. Everything is changing and the friends have to say goodbye to each other.
In the final scene, Eleven finds a paternal speech from Hopper. He wrote the letter to hopefully discuss her budding romance with Mike, but he didn’t have the opportunity to deliver it to her. Hopper narrates, “I don’t want things to change. Keep on growing up, kid. Don’t let me stop you.” Cue the tears.
Where To Go From Here
On Sept. 30, Netflix officially announced Stranger Things would be returning for a fourth season. Fans rejoiced, but they immediately had their questions. The announcement delivered a cryptic video and message: “We’re not in Hawkins anymore.” But what does this mean? Don’t worry; fans already have their theories.
For example, a popular theory suggests Hopper may not have died or was captured by the Russians. Some think he may have entered the gate to the Upside Down before it closed. How will Hopper get back to Eleven? That’s still a mystery, but the Season 4 teaser seems to imply that the Upside Down will be an important part of the upcoming season.
The announcement trailer shows a version of the Upside Down, and it’s an active dimension. What else could be down there? The caption “We’re not in Hawkins anymore” could also refer to the idea that many of the main characters have moved away, so not everyone is in Hawkins, Indiana anymore. The Netflix series is expanding on the setting and moving away from the small-town Indiana atmosphere.
A release date for Stranger Things 4 hasn’t yet been announced. But whenever the new season is released, we’re confident fans will stream it in one sitting (like they did with the third season) and fall in love with the characters all over again.
