Steve Carell Has Begun Working On Netflix’s “Space Force”

Space Force

Last year, President Donald Trump revealed plans to launch a Space Force in the armed forces. Streaming giants Netflix saw a potential sitcom hit and partnered with The Office‘s Steve Carell. Now, the forthcoming Space Force series has begun filming its first season.

Ready To Roll?

Netflix shared the first on-set photo of Steve Carell shooting the show. “In space, no one can hear you scream … but this show takes place on earth sooooo STEVE CARELL HAS STARTED FILMING SPACE FORCE!!!!!!,” they tweeted. Earlier this year, they released an announcement trailer for the show. Fans were excited to see Carell back in action. “I literally was in mid-sentence talking to my wife about this…Just think of the cameos…OMG,” Twitter user JKyleKnighten1 said. One fan believes this could be one big swerve for an Office reunion. “What if this is just a new movie Michael has made up like Threat Level Midnight and this is the reunion we’ve wanted,” Twitter user getcapeandflyy said.

The Furious Five

On the show, Carell portrays Space Force general, Mark R. Naird. He’s isn’t the only big name for Space Force. John Malkovich will portray head scientist advisor Dr. Adrian Mallory. Malkovich earned Oscar nominations for his work in Places in the Heart and In the Line of Fire. Ben Schwartz will play the role of media consultant F. Tony Scarapiducci. Schwartz can be heard on the animated series Duck Tales and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Tawny Newsome has been cast as helicopter pilot Angela Ali. The comedian can soon be heard in the forthcoming show Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Along with these noticeable names comes a new face in the scene. Diana Silvers will take her spot as Mark’s daughter Erin. Silvers made her acting debut in a 2018 episode of Hulu’s horror anthology Into the Dark. Earlier this year, she appeared in the critically acclaimed film Booksmart.

The Tremendous Three

While those five actors make up the core cast, a few recurring faces will also appear. Jimmy O. Yang will play Dr. Mallory’s aid Dr. Chan Kaifang. Yang is best known for his portrayal of Jian-Yang in HBO’s Silicon Valley. Don Lake is set to appear as Mark’s assistant Brad Gregory. The Canadian has collaborated with Bonnie Hunt on Life with Bonnie and The Bonnie Hunt Show. Alex Sparrow will play Russian government official Yuri “Bobby” Telatovich on the show. The Russian made his American acting debut in 2014’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Can’t Go Back In Today’s World

Space Force finds Carell reuniting with The Office‘s creator Greg Daniels and executive producer Howard Klein. With news of a potential Office reboot, Carell stated he’s not reprising his role as Michael Scott. “The climate’s different. I mean, the whole idea of that character, Michael Scott, so much of it was predicated on inappropriate behavior. I mean, he’s certainly not a model boss. A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That’s the point, you know?,” Carrell told Esquire. “But I just don’t know how that would fly now. There’s a very high awareness of offensive things today—which is good, for sure. But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn’t really work.”

Carell earned 10 Emmy nominations for his work on the NBC sitcom. On November 1, Carell will star in The Morning Show on Apple TV+. This show will find him reuniting with Bruce Almighty co-star Jennifer Aniston. The first season of Space Force will run for 10 30-minute episodes. The show will launch on Netflix sometime in 2020.
