Stephen King’s ‘The Talisman’ Attracts ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Director

Published

Since the ’80s, Steven Spielberg has owned the film rights to Stephen King’s novel, The Talisman. With various film projects on Spielberg’s plate, this adaptation was obviously put on the shelf. Fortunately, Spielberg has found the perfect director to bring this to life.

From Hulu To The Big Screen

It was revealed that Mike Barker will direct the movie. The U.K. native is best known for his work on The Handmaid’s Tale. In 2018, he earned his first Emmy nomination through the popular Hulu series.

Barker has also directed episodes of Z: The Beginning of Everything, Fargo, and Broadchurch.

Years In The Making

Spielberg managed to grab the film rights for The Talisman two years before it was released. He needed some help from the higher-ups to obtain it, though. “Universal bought the book for me, so it wasn’t optioned. It was an outright sale of the book,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Over the years, Spielberg tried to give The Talisman a live-action presentation. In the early 2000s, he tried making it a miniseries on ABC before going back to a film adaptation. In 2008, he tried for another miniseries with TNT before it was dropped due to money issues. “I’ve owned the book since ’82, and I’m hoping to get this movie made in the next couple of years. I’m not committing to the project as a director, I’m just saying that it’s something that I’ve wanted to see come to theaters for the last 35 years,” he said.

Slowly Building Up

Barker will join screenwriter Chris Sparling on the project. Sparling earned praise with 2010’s psychological thriller Buried, which stars Ryan Reynolds. The screenwriter earned Best Original Screenplay wins at the Goya Awards and National Board of Review Awards.

While details are slowly coming in, you can expect Spielberg to get this rolling before the year ends.
