What’s Going To Happen In ‘Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’?

Updated

on

In April 2019, Lucasfilm debuted the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, Illinois. Fans were provided with a sneak peek of the new installment. But it didn’t take long for them to think of their own theories about what to expect.

So Many Questions

Fans aren’t really prepared for the final film in the Skywalker Saga, but they can expect a lot of action and important storylines in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The film’s title seems appropriate as a bookend for a franchise that started with a young farm boy 40 years ago. But fans still have questions. Is Rey a Skywalker? Or, is the film going to promise a new arc for the villain, Kylo Ren? Watch the trailer and come up with your own ideas.

What questions do you have? The teaser trailer doesn’t give us much information yet, but it’s enough to get us excited. Expectations are high for what this film will reveal.

What does The Rise of Skywalker even mean? Fans love to solve mysteries, so here are five possible fan theories to get you started. Remember: These are all merely theories. You’ll have to wait until December 20, 2019, to find out the real answers.

All About The Skywalker Bloodline

This is the most realistic fan theory. It makes sense that The Rise of Skywalker would be about the Skywalker bloodline. With the return of Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) in some form to the Skywalker Saga, it would be best to find a way to tie up loose ends in the story. Is Palpatine directly responsible for the creation of the Skywalker bloodline? Who else belongs to the Skywalker family? Could it possibly be Rey?

Rey Is A Skywalker

That’s a big fan theory: that Rey (Daisy Ridley) is a member of the Skywalker family tree. Fans have already speculated about Rey’s lineage, already wondering if she is a lost Skywalker, either by Luke, Leia, or some other far-flung relative. Fans thought this theory was incorrect in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which established that Rey’s parents were “nobody,” but Rey is the trilogy’s main hero. Her prominence in the new trailer, which teases “Every generation has a legend,” could be leading us to believe that Rey is actually a Skywalker after all. Is she the legend? Or, is it someone else entirely?

Kylo Ren Is Redeemed

Fans have mixed views on villain Kylo Ren, the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa. Should he have redemption? Yes, he killed the beloved Han Solo, but others say he’s not as bad as his grandfather, Darth Vader. If Darth Vader could have redemption, then couldn’t Kylo Ren? The Rise of Skywalker could mean the redemption of Kylo Ren and his rebirth as Ben Skywalker.

Leia Is The Most Important One

We briefly see Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) in the teaser trailer. Fans are wondering if Leia is the legend and the hero of the Skywalker Saga’s final film. Fans referred back to the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back, when Yoda says, “No, there is another,” in response to Obi-Wan’s statement that Luke is their last hope. If Luke isn’t everyone’s last hope, could it be his twin sister, Leia?

Before Fisher’s passing in 2016, it was reported the then-untitled Episode 9 would focus on Leia, just as The Force Awakens focused on Han Solo and The Last Jedi centered on Luke. If every generation has a legend, there would be no better way to send off Fisher’s iconic character than to reveal she is the most important Skywalker of all.

Skywalker Is In All Of Us

Maybe the title doesn’t refer to any specific character. Maybe it’s not about Rey, Kylo Ren, or Princess Leia. Instead, maybe it relates to the enduring message of The Last Jedi: that everyone can rise to be a hero if they so choose. It would be fitting for the final Skywalker Saga film to highlight the lasting legacy of Luke Skywalker and how his legacy inspires everyone, even the fans, into action.
