In 1977, the words “A long time ago in a galaxy, far, far away…”, scrolled across the screen. From there, a saga was born. Episode IX: Rise of the Skywalker is the final chapter and will close this epic story. A teaser trailer was released on April 12, 2019, and now fans want more.
The Laugh Heard Round The World
At the Star Wars Celebration 2019, the trailer for Episode IX premiered. It was viewed 111 million times in the first 24 hours. Fans watched it many times, looking for every little detail that could be discussed.
The trailer shows Rey standing on a deserted planet. As she stands there waiting for what is coming, Luke’s voice is heard. As his voice is speaking, Rey pulls out her lightsaber and leaps over a Tie Fighter that was racing towards her. Next, the Millenium Falcon appears to be rushing towards a lush planet, who appears to be piloted by Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca.
Kylo Ren is shown, briefly fighting in the woods, and then repairing his damaged mask. Poe and Finn are on a speeder dodging dangers around them. C3P0 could be seen with them. The heroes then are climbing a hill and come to the wreckage of a Death Star. Luke can be heard saying “No one is ever really gone.” then the screen goes black. The evil laughter of Emporer Palpatine is heard, as the Star Wars title page displays.
The World Erupted On The Internet
Almost immediately, there was chatter about the trailer. Most fans were discussing the laugh and what it means. Is Emporer Palpatine really back, or is it a clone? Fans already know that Disney discarded the Extended Universe, but that didn’t stop JJ Abrams from playing with pieces of it. Maybe this is another nod to the EU for the fans. It is possible that the Emperor could be a Force spirit. The previous films have shown Jedi as Force Spirits, there is nothing stating a Sith couldn’t do the same.
Fans rejoiced at Lando Carilissian making an appearance as he is a beloved character. Most touching was Rey and Leia hugging. JJ used unused footage from The Force Awakens of Leia, as Carrie Fisher passed away. Whether the footage is going to be used as a flashback or in the current time is unknown. but it was a far more respectful way to honor the late Carrie Fisher, instead of CGI.
The title of the film has also caused much discussion. Kylo Ren is the last known Skywalker, is he going to finally rise up and defeat the Dark Side? Even though The Last Jedi tried to make Rey’s family seem not important, fans still think that Rey is also a Skywalker and that could be about her. Another theory states that this could be the end of the Jedi and Sith, and the path is the Skywalker path.
The Cast, Familiar Faces And New Faces
Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac are all returning as Rey, Kylo Ren, Finn, and Poe. Of course, Mark Hamill is reprising his role as Luke, and Billie Dee as Lando Carilisian. Billie Lourd, Domhail Gleeson, and Kelly Marie Tran will also be reprising their roles. Ian McDiarmid has confirmed that he has returned as the Emporer, which excited fans everywhere. Keri Russell and Dominic Monaghan have joined the cast as well. There is not a lot of information about their roles yet, but there is still time until the film’s release.
The End Of A Saga
Theories and speculation are going to continue to be discussed. Each fan theory will be dissected and studied until the release. The Rise of the Skywalker is set to be released on December 20, 2019, in the US. In the meantime, fans will have to continue to watch the teaser trailer for now. No matter what, this will end the Skywalker story that began so many years ago.
