You Can Play ‘Spot The Differences’ With Some Of The New Avengers Posters

Published

on

Comic books and their film adaptations are subjected to more scrutiny by dedicated fans than doctors are for risky medical procedures. But you wouldn’t guess that from looking at the latest Avengers: Infinity War poster, as well as a few of the film’s other promotional one-sheets.

Thor’s Scar

Comic-book fans can make even eagles seem short-sighted when it comes to spotting tiny mistakes in their favorite franchises. Unfortunately, you don’t need to be able to recite the Avengers films to spot this one. Maybe somebody is sleeping on the job, or perhaps the pressure is getting to their marketing guys’ heads.

Take a look at Thor. SPOILER ALERT: in Thor: Ragnarok, Thor had his right eye ripped out by Hela, played by Cate Blanchett. If you take a closer, or actually, a normal look at Thor’s face here, you will see that although the eye-patch is on the right side, the scar isn’t. The mistake was first spotted by Slashfilm. It is likely that whoever created the poster mirrored Chris Hemsworth’s face, remembered to move the patch, but not the scar. Even though this error was quite sloppy, it might not have happened if the poster wasn’t so overcrowded and didn’t require putting different characters together like pieces of a puzzle.

Bucky’s Arm

But it doesn’t end there. In another poster of the film for Chinese audiences, a much less obvious, but nevertheless unprofessional, mistake surfaced in the eyes of fans on Reddit. This time, the victim is Bucky, and more specifically, his bionic arm which doesn’t look too bionic at all.

While using CGI just to recreate a bionic arm for a poster wouldn’t be very cost-efficient, a sleeve that covers the whole arm isn’t too much to ask, especially from such a multi-million dollar production. In a market as huge as the Chinese one, this mistake might turn out to cost more than the actual CGI would have if the Chinese fans decide to be unforgiving. Which they probably won’t.

Time As A Factor

Maybe this recurring problem is due to timing. Posters are usually done after trailers are released since devoted fans can often decipher elements of the storyline from something as still as a poster. Once the trailer is released, piecing together a dozen superheroes in a pinch can lead to overlooked details.

I mean, just look at that! It’s more over-crowded than a mall on Black Friday. It’s painful to watch, let alone design. Perhaps those mistakes might remind Marvel of the golden rule which applies to so many things: less is more.
