Sony Closes The Book On Spider-Man’s Return To The MCU

Spider-Man

The Internet exploded when Sony revealed Spider-Man would no longer be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many fans have been wishing for a possible deal between Sony and Marvel Studios. Unfortunately, Sony has confirmed there’s no chance of him coming back.

End Of An Era

At Variety‘s Entertainment & Technology summit, Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra discussed the current Spider-Man situation. Talks between Sony and Marvel Studios over financial support went south. As a result, Sony has pulled Spider-Man from all Marvel Studios films. While things didn’t work out, Vinciquerra has no issue with Marvel Studios. “We had a great run with (Kevin Feige) on Spider-Man movies. We tried to see if there’s a way to work it out. The Marvel people are terrific people, we have great respect for them, but on the other hand, we have some pretty terrific people of our own. Kevin didn’t do all the work,” Vinciquerra told Variety.

Too Much On Their Plate

With Disney’s acquisition of Fox, Feige has been working on a slew of projects. Because of this, he turned his attention away from Spider-Man. Without Feige, the deal was destined to collapse. “Understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him — including all their newly added Marvel properties — do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own,” a Sony representative told Polygon.

At this summer’s D23, Feige made his first statement about Spider-Man’s split from the MCU. “We got to make five films within the MCU with Spider-Man: two standalone films and three with the Avengers. It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I’ll always be thankful for that,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Gotta Stay Positive

While he’s no longer with the MCU, actor Tom Holland is staying optimistic. “Basically, we’ve made five great movies It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”

Holland beat out Charlie Plummer, Asa Butterfield, and Charlie Rowe for the role of Spider-Man.

Does Whatever A Spider Can

With Spider-Man’s departure, the third Spider-Man film in the MCU is no more. His sudden absence could be explained in a forthcoming movie. Under Sony, a different slew of characters will surround Spider-Man. “Spider-Man was fine before the event movies, did better with the event movies, and now that we have our own universe, he will play off the other characters as well. I think we’re pretty capable of doing what we have to do here,” Vinciquerra told Variety.

One encounter fans have been begging for is between Spider-Man and Venom. Since 2018’s Venom, fans have wanted the two characters to run into each other. With separate studios in the way, it seemed to be unlikely. With both fully under Sony, it’ll probably come sooner than later. Venom 2 is slated to drop on October 2, 2020. The studio could easily throw Spider-Man in a mid-credits scene. Aside from Venom, Spider-Man can also encounter Morbius, Black Cat, and the Sinister Six. With the outcry from fans, however, both studios might try to renegotiate Spider-Man’s return into the MCU.
