24-year-old mechanical engineering graduate, Shekeb Neda managed to save his disabled mother, Flora, by carrying her on his back down 24 flights of stairs inside the burning Grenfell Tower in London.

According to a report by Mirror, the mother who is suffering from a muscle disease collapsed on the floor when black smoke started entering the family’s flat located on the topmost floor of the building. In order to save her, Neda carried his mother on his back while bravely traversing smoke-filled stairs and corridors until they reached the exit.

In an interview with the The Sun, Neda’s uncle, Aref said: “Shekeb needed to get her out quickly. He took her arms, put them around his neck and carried her over his back down all 24 floors.”

Neda’s heroic deed was not left unrecognized by those around him.

“He sprinted with her down the stairs the whole way. I just don’t know how he did it. He must have summoned the strength somehow in the moment. With all the smoke and the flames it really is unbelievable,” remarked 62-year-old Fahim Muzhary, father of one of Neda’s friends.

While the mother and son are currently recovering at the hospital, Neda’s father, Mohamed ‘Saber’ Neda is unfortunately still missing.

The father was apparently left behind the flat when Neda and his mother were escaping, and one has seen him since then. Neda and his family emigrated to the United Kingdom from Afghanistan.

Apart from Saber, 74 other people are still missing in the fire. To date, 30 fatalities have been confirmed and 79 people are already presumed dead.

This Grenfell Tower tragedy is now regarded as the deadliest structural fire in the United Kingdom surpassing the 1985 Bradford City Stadium fire that killed 56 people.
