Guy Wins Best Dad Award By Keeping His Cool Over Slushie Spill

We’ve all had those moments. The little human you’re in charge of has just made a huge mess, usually in spite of your directions to the contrary. How do you respond?

Kalynne Marie, a single mom from Minneapolis, witnessed one such moment while she was doing some work in the café area of a Target store. She was so impressed by what she saw happen, she was moved to post about it on her Facebook page. Here’s what she posted:

Parenting Done Right

“I just witnessed a boy, maybe about 6 or 7, accidentally spill a slushie everywhere. I’m talking blue and red goop all over the floor, the table, everywhere. The boy looked up at who I assume was his father, and immediately apologized. Instead of getting angry, his father just said ‘Hey, it happens. Let’s go get napkins and I can show you how to clean it up.’ Then they calmly went to get napkins and then he helped him clean the entire mess. Then, as they were throwing the napkins away, the father said to his son, ‘You’re going to be a human being for a long time, and you have such a smart brain that it’s important you learn how to be more aware of what you’re doing. So next time just be sure to pay more attention to your surroundings so accidents like this don’t happen. Accidents like these can be prevented, but it’s still okay if they happen. As long as you take responsibility for your mistakes, the clean up is a breeze.’ I have no words. That is parenting done right.”

It’s Always OK To Ask For Help

Kalynne added this to her post a short time later: “EDIT TO UPDATE: they are still sitting nearby, and the father just said, ‘I know big messes seem overwhelming and you might feel like you can’t do it by yourself, but it’s always okay to ask for help. There is no problem with asking for help when you need it.'”

Kalynne said that she was so impressed with how the dad handled the situation that she opened the Notes app on her phone to be sure she recorded the conversation word for word. The story quickly went viral, being shared more than 58,000 times.

Joe And Gus

A week later, she bumped into the man and his son again at the same Target. “‘The father’s name is Joe and his son is Gus,” she said. “I told him that I had witnessed the slushie spill last week and he started laughing and said, ‘Oh yeah! That was a fun mess to clean up’ I showed him the post and the comments of everyone who applauded him. He smiled the whole time and started getting teary-eyed.”

Kalynne said that she and Joe went on to talk for around 20 minutes about parenting and how hard it can be sometimes to keep your cool. They parted with a hug and a thank-you from Joe.
