The relationship between Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith is something to behold. For over 20 years, the married couple has won the hearts of everyone through their affection and generosity. While under quarantine, Pinkett-Smith discovered something shocking about her blissful marriage.
Who Are You Again?
On Facebook Watch’s Red Table Talk, the actress discussed how their relationship was affected by quarantine. For Pinkett-Smith, she came to the conclusion that she doesn’t really know Will. “I feel like there’s a layer that you get to, life gets busy and you create these stories in your head and then you hold onto these stories and that is your idea of your partner, that’s not who your partner is,” Pinkett-Smith said on the show.
Pinkett-Smith believes this isolated time together will help them grow as individuals and a couple. “Will and I are in the process of him taking the time to learn to love himself, me taking the time to learn to love myself and us building a friendship along the way,” she also said on Red Table Talk.
Love at First Sight
Pinkett-Smith met her husband on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air back in 1994. At the time, the actress was exiting a main cast stint on the NBC sitcom A Different World. To her, hopping onto another NBC series was bound to be a piece of cake. Pinkett-Smith auditioned for the role of Smith’s girlfriend Lisa Wilkes. This role, however, was given to Nia Long because Pinkett-Smith was too short for the gig. Fortunately for her, she became Smith’s real-life girlfriend in 1995. Two years later, the couple tied the knot on December 31, 1997. The actress brought two kids in the world: Jaden and Willow.
Inspired by Will’s impressive music career, Pinkett-Smith began her own as the singer for Wicked Wisdom. The metal act unveiled their debut album My Story in 2004. The record landed them a deal with Suburban Noize for their 2006 self-titled album. This release had her husband as the executive producer. With Wicked Wisdom, Pinkett-Smith toured the U.S. with Britney Spears, Black Sabbath and Sevendust. Much like her, Jaden and Willow also caught the music bug with albums of their own.
Pinkett-Smith has worked with her husband on a handful of film and TV projects. One of their biggest projects together was 2001’s Ali, which finds Will portraying Muhammad Ali. In the film, Pinkett-Smith plays Ali’s ex-wife Sonji Roi. On the small screen, the couple co-created the hit TV series All of Us. The sitcom, which stars Duane Martin and LisaRaye McCoy, was based on the couple’s real-life family. The last time Pinkett-Smith teamed up with her husband was in 2012’s Men In Black 3. In the film, Pinkett-Smith has a quick cameo as a party guest.
The Future Looks Bright
For the couple, they’ll still continue working on the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation. Launched in 1997, this foundation supports urban youth through various donations. As of 2018, the foundation has raised almost $2 million. The pair have also helped out various other organizations with their time. In 2010, they skipped celebrating their birthdays to help raise money for Charity Water. In the end, they managed to raise nearly $789,000 in donations. The couple was then sent to Ethiopia to witness how much their donations impacted the land. The money was used to build a new well in the Maego village.
It may be a while before things go back to normal for the world. For Pinkett-Smith, she’ll use this time to strengthen her relationship with her family. When things are in the clear, they’ll be able to cherish their time together more.
