Sherlock Holmes 3 Is Finally Happening (Here’s When It Comes Out)

The wait is finally over! Sherlock Holmes 3 has been announced. Now, all we have to do is wait for the actual movie to come out, and it’s not exactly coming soon.

Finishing The Trilogy

Warner Bros. has set December 25th, 2020 as the release date for the third film in the film series based on the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This choice is far from random – the first two films also came out during the Christmas season, and they got over $1 billion combined from Santa.

Some of this box office success was credited to the lack of competition during the holidays. However, that won’t be the case in 2020 since the long-awaited Avatar 2 is scheduled to come out the week before Christmas.

Who’s Back

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will reprise their roles (Holmes himself and his trusty sidekick Watson, respectively). But for now, the mastermind who molded the last two films’ distinctive edginess – Guy Ritchie, has not yet confirmed. This could clearly make all the difference to the overall feel of the film.

Nevertheless, given that Sherlock Holmes 3 will be penned by Narcos writer Chris Brancato, the film is bound to dynamically interweave action and wit. Joel Silver, Susan Downey, and Lionel Wigram are returning as producers, along with Village Roadshow as co-producer.

Delays Are Common For The Series

Over 2 years ago, Robert Downey Jr. promised that the third Sherlock Holmes would start filming soon, but didn’t reveal any more details. A Game of Shadows, the second film of the franchise, was also delayed.

Warner Bros.

“When we’re making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook,” Downey said in 2016. “It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I’m tired all the time, but I’m so excited about it.”

Most fans would certainly prefer to wait longer for a masterpiece than to watch something mediocre sooner.
