Shannen Doherty’s Main Reason For Joining The ‘Heathers’ Reboot

Hollywood simply can’t get enough with reboots today. Several classic films and TV series are getting revamped for the new generation. This fall, Heathers will get the small screen reboot. Trying to grab someone from the original product can be rough. One star, however, managed to make it work.

A Killer Comedy

Shannen Doherty’s acting career saw a major boost with her performance in 1988’s Heathers. The black comedy became a cult classic, and influenced several other teen comedies. Doherty’s character Heather Duke comes off innocent, but she eventually shows her true colors. This was the first major box office role for Doherty following stints on Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Night Shift.

Return To Class?

While going through her battle with breast cancer, Doherty heard about the forthcoming TV series from her people. “I had been going through chemo and had no hair when my [team] told me, ‘They’re remaking Heathers and they wanna know if you’d be interested,’” she told Entertainment Weekly.

A Refreshing View

Doherty had doubts about a TV adaptation working in today’s atmosphere. Things changed when she got her hands on the script. “I was blown away by how good it was, and how [new Heathers creator Jason A. Micallef] managed to be respectful to the original but also bring his own spin to it,” she said.

Creating The Blueprint

When it comes to the original film, Doherty believes it was ahead of its time. “All of the characters were kind of jerks. Now that’s the norm, but back then we didn’t have a lot of big characters with flaws. [Original Heathers writer] Dan Waters did it with a wink, wink, nudge, nudge; Jason brings that to the new Heathers,” she said.

A Grand Return

In the new series, Doherty will portray the role of J.D.’s deceased mother.  “Weak in some ways and strong in others, but really is just no-holds-barred and says whatever she wants. She’s a Heather,” she said. Heathers arrives on the Paramount Network on October 25 for a five night event.
