Shania Twain Shuts Down Criticism Over Apparent Trump Support

Published

on

Most people don’t talk much about Donald Trump unless it’s to criticize him or poke a little fun. Country superstar Shania Twain found herself in trouble recently for neither — apparently, she outed herself as a member of MAGA Nation.

Shania Twain Is A Trump Supporter?

The 52-year old Canadian singer revealed to The Guardian that had she been American, she would have voted for the bad boy of politics. “I would have voted for him because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest. Do you want straight or polite? Not that you shouldn’t be able to have both,” she told the outlet.

“If I were voting, I just don’t want bull***t. I would have voted for a feeling that it was transparent. And politics has a reputation of not being that, right?” Truth be told, she has a point, one which was clearly shared by a large portion of America at the time of the election. But within the context of the aftermath of Trump’s presidency, her statement wasn’t received well.

Twitter Didn’t Approve

As you can probably imagine, Twitter became a platform for rather severe criticism. Some fans were shocked and repelled. “Shania Twain came out as a Trump supporter how could my mother betray me like this………. this is the worst day of my life,” one user dramatically wrote.

Others saw the situation as an opportunity for a clever pun: “Shania Twain would vote Trump. That don’t impress me much…” another user wrote, referencing Twain’s hit song “That Don’t Impress Me Much.” Yet there were those who didn’t let the singer’s political views throw a shadow over their admiration for her persona: “I love Shania Twain. Her opinions are her own,” another person wrote.

She Elaborated

Nevertheless, Shania Twain decided to further explain her somewhat shocking statement: “I am passionately against discrimination of any kind and hope it’s clear from the choices I have made, and the people I stand with, that I do not hold any common moral beliefs with the current President,” she recently tweeted. “I was trying to explain, in response to a question about the election, that my limited understanding was that the President talked to a portion of America like an accessible person they could relate to, as he was NOT a politician.”

“My answer was awkward, but certainly should not be taken as representative of my values nor does it mean I endorse him. I make music to bring people together. My path will always be one of inclusivity, as my history shows.”

Twain just might have a talent for political discourse and media spin all her own!
