Seth Meyers Explains Steve Bannon’s Departure

Published

Seth Meyers isn’t the first late-night personality to refer to Steve Bannon as the “real president” of the United States. The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert, Real Time host Bill Maher, Trevor Noah of The Daily Show, and the cast of Saturday Night Live have all poked fun at the idea of the former Breitbart News chairman pulling President Donald Trump’s strings.

Well, according to a recent New York Times piece that Meyer’s quoted on Thursday’s “Closer Look” segment; Trump hasn’t taken kindly to all the “President Bannon” jokes.

“Oh my God. Donald, I’m so sorry. I never would’ve called Steven Bannon the president if I knew it hurt your feelings so much,” Meyers said. “And this is terrible timing but I guess I shouldn’t have commissioned that official presidential portrait of Steve Bannon and certainly shouldn’t have asked for this photo to be mocked up of Bannon sitting at the desk in the oval Office while you play with blocks and pretend to build your wall. I’m so sorry.”

Last month, Trump dismissed previous allegations that others were manipulating his role as president.

“I call my own shots, largely based on an accumulation of data, and everyone knows it,” he tweeted. “Some FAKE NEWS media, in order to marginalize, lies!”

There does appear to be some truth to this because earlier this week, Bannon was removed from his National Security Council post, a role usually given to upper echelons of the military.

“There’s a big fight [going on],” one senior official said, according to The Daily Beast. “It’s all about policy. There’s tension [between them] on trade, health care, immigration, taxes, [terrorism]—you name it.”

There’s also been talk about a feud between Bannon and Trump’s senior advisor Jared Kusher, who is also the president’s son-in-law. According to reports, Bannon has called Kushner a “cuck” and a “globalist.”

“Steve thinks Jared is worse than a Democrat, basically,” another official close to Bannon said. “[Steve] has a very specific vision for what he believes, and what he shares [ideologically] with Trump. And he has for a long time now seen [Jared] as a major obstacle to achieving that.”

It’s been a busy week of diplomacy for Trump. On Monday he met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, on Wednesday he met with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, and on Friday he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The latter came less than 24 hours after Trump ordered U.S. airstrikes against a Syrian airbase in Homs.

The deployment of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles was in retaliation for the Assad regime’s recent use of chemical weapons against their own people. The bombed airbase, which has been described as being “almost completely destroyed,” was where the Syrian jets responsible for the chemical attack took off.

But while Bannon may have fallen out of favor, it’s clear that he will remain in the White House—and in a senior role. The Trump administration has since tried to spin the Bannon decision as a natural conclusion to his initial appointment to the principles committee, rather than a demotion.

“I always believed Steve would be the first senior advisor to leave the White House,” a former Trump aide told CNN. “He’s an ideologue. Trump is not. He has to get frustrated.”
