5 Series Finales That Flipped The Entire Show Upside Down

Published

on

Every TV show has to bid farewell sooner or later. While some finales are amazing, others tend to completely throw the viewers off. We look at some series finales that managed to change the overall landscape of their show. To this day, fans still have debates about these specific episodes.

Lost In The Shuffle

Lost fans nearly went on a rampage following the series finale. Everyone was rooting for them to finally make it off the island. Unfortunately, the survivors were dead the whole time. The church scene had viewers in a total panic. Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof stood by this shocking decision. “I take responsibility and authorship for Lost, and in terms of my own feelings about the ending, I make no apologies for it. It’s the story I wanted to tell,” he told On The Verge.

Some Minor Changes

Roseanne managed to throw one of the biggest curveballs seen in ’90s television. Nearly everything that happened before the finale was a lie. Dan actually died in the heart attack back in season eight, and the family never won the lottery. As a writer, Roseanne felt like switching up some stuff for her memoir.

Dead Before It Started

How I Met Your Mother started out as a simple storytime with Ted about his kids’ mother. Fans finally got the meet their mother Tracy at the season’s start. Unfortunately, it was discovered that she died six years before this story was told. Due to various petitions, an alternative ending was shot for the season nine DVD. This ending finds Tracy still alive and well.

A Finale To Die For

With a show like Six Feet Under, fans expected the worst for its series finale. For years, they watched the Fisher family go through the trials and tribulations of running a funeral home. The final episode shows exactly how the main cast dies in the future. “When I first read the final episode it felt like a giant mortality bomb to me, like we’d been emotionally and existentially strafing our first viewers for years and this was meant to be a final death blow with brutal aftershocks. And it was,” actor  Peter Krause told The Hollywood Reporter. The episode also gave singer Sia her first big hit with its inclusion of “Breathe Me.”

An Abrupt Ending

When the final season of The Sopranos was announced, fans assumed Tony would finally meet his maker. Unfortunately, it all ended with the controversial cut to black following the diner door opening. Sopranos creator David Chase originally wanted to kill Tony through a meeting with Phil Leotardo. “Whenever the show went off the air, we were going to use that, and then I just changed my mind. I decided to do this instead. I thought it was more interesting,” Chase told Deadline.
