Serena Williams Is Grateful For Meghan Markle’s Friendship

It’s funny how things can change in a short time. Meghan Markle went from TV star to Duchess of Sussex within a couple of years. While she changed lifestyles, Markle is still the same person from Los Angeles. Tennis legend and best friend Serena Williams knows a thing or two about Markle’s greatness.

A Friend In Need

Williams spoke to Access Hollywood about their tight friendship. The athlete talked about Markle’s surprise summer trip to New York to catch her Wimbledon match. “She flew all the way with a newborn to see me play in New York and flew all the way back that night, and I probably couldn’t have done that,” Serena told the publication.

Unfortunately, having royalty present can cause concern for ticket holders in the area. Many people were told to avoid taking photos of Markle, which could’ve revealed her identity. While Williams avoids the tabloids, she appreciates Markle’s loyalty. “I didn’t know there was negative media out there, any time I see her name attached to anything I don’t read it. She couldn’t be a better friend to me. Low moments, high moments, she’s always there and that’s all I want to be to her,” Williams said during a post-match interview.

The Best Of Times

Williams and Markle have been friends long before royalty got involved. In 2010, Markle met Williams at a Super Bowl party. At the time, Markle was months away from being cast in USA’s popular legal drama Suits. Four years later, the duo joined forces at New York City’s DirecTV Beach Bowl. In her defunct blog The Tig, Markle discussed being instant friends with Williams following the game. “We hit it off immediately, taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing in, and chatting not about tennis or acting, but about all the good old fashioned girly stuff. So began our friendship,” she wrote.

Several Months later, Markle supported Williams at the 2014 U.S. Open, which found Williams winning in women’s singles. For Markle, Williams felt like the sister she never had. “She quickly became a confidante I would text when I was traveling, the friend I would rally around for her tennis matches, and the down to earth chick I was able to grab lunch with just a couple weeks ago in Toronto,” Markle also wrote in her blog. Markle continued supporting Williams at the Australian Open in 2015 and Wimbledon in 2016.

Friends ‘Til The End

When it came to Markle becoming the new Duchess, Williams showed support for her close friend. “I told her, ‘You’ve got to be who you are, Meghan. You can’t hide,’” Williams told Vanity Fair in 2017. When Markle unveiled the 2018 cookbook Together: Our Community Cookbook, Williams was the first to congratulate her. “I used to call you Meghan (and I still do) but dear Duchess of Sussex your first project ‘Together’ a cookbook bringing women of all cultures together. I could not be more excited about it and proud of you. It’s beautiful—diversity, inclusivity, coming together in grief or joy,” Williams said on Instagram.

Today, the two live in different parts of the world, but they still keep in touch during crucial moments. “I call her, text her anytime, crying, upset — she’s always there. Doesn’t matter what she’s going through, she just sets time away, and she’s just so amazing,” Williams told Access Hollywood.

Celebrity friendships tend to fall apart as quickly as they’re established. Constant work, different lifestyles, and the rumor mill have led to the demise of many famous friendships. For Williams and Markle, their connection will hopefully only grow stronger over the years.
